Senate Democrats accepted a provision Friday forcing a decision in two months on the Keystone XL oil pipeline as part of the must-pass payroll tax cut package, leaving the White House on the brink of a meltdown with environmental groups.
"It's bulls-," said Sierra Club President Michael Brune. "This is no way to run a government. We've got Republicans in Congress who are willing to hold the entire government hostage simply to give a Christmas present to industry."
GOP and Democratic sources told POLITICO that the White House swallowed the House Republican-written pipeline rider in order to get a deal to extend the tax holiday, jobless benefits and the Medicare reimbursement rate into February.
For greens, the fact that the Keystone pipeline was back on the table five weeks after Obama had seemingly punted it until 2013 is causing considerable heartburn with an administration that hasn't been as green as they once wished.
Their initial win looked even better because it came just days after thousands circled the White House at a weekend protest that drew celebrity faces like actor Mark Ruffalo. But now Obama's environmental allies again face the question of whether to withhold support for his reelection campaign.

This is an issue tailor-made for President Rick Perry.
This is an issue tailor-made for GOVERNOR Rick Perry.
Excellent points. Thanks for the response. I would tend to agree that doing both is probably the best long-term real solution.
I rather imagine ANY solution will rile up the enviro-whackos and other assorted tree huggers and PETA freaks. So, that’s just a ‘given’...
Good to keep options open.
***Because I remember the fight over the Alaska pipeline to Prudoe Bay and the greenies said all kinds of terrible things would happen...***
I remember those days! My kin said the Alaska pipeline would NEVER be built.
I said that when the next Arab oil embargo hits it WILL be built.
Five years later the pipeline was in service.
That's always been obama's big weakness, he can't make a decision. The more important a decision the more undecided he is. It's why his record in the IL state senate and the US senate is full of "present" votes. It's why our RQ-170 drone wasn't destroyed. It's why he has taken no stand on anything except for the things he believed in as a community agitator. It's why he has to go.
Enviros a small leftist cult comprised of nearly 100% white doofuses who cannot contemplate that the Left is mostly comprised of grifters and those who are on the left half of the Bell Curve and hence could care less about Bambi.
Who are they gonna vote for, Ron Paul?
Mike
Doubtful.
He lacks the saltiness and toughness of pipeliners and pipeline schedulers.
You kinda see the same characteristics in roustabouts.
Moochelle might have them, but not Braack.
said Sierra Club President Michael Brune. "This is no way to run a government. We've got Republicans in Congress who are willing to hold the entire government hostage simply to give a Christmas present to industry."This should be the caption over a picture of this joker, along with identifying information, in every union hall in the US.
A few weeks ago a Canadian posted that the original proposal was to route the pipeline along side the existing one. According to the poster, the route was changed to a shortcut across the Sandhills at the request of the US.
It's simply about power over others. Power is the aphrodesiac for these loonies. Always has been through the history of man.

Ohh, what I would give to have five minutes alone with this guy in a padded room with a baseball bat. It enrages me to listen to him spout this, when he and those like him are holding the livelihood of ordinary Americans hostage. I’d like to see him spend a week in an African village without industry and see what life is like, nevermind the rest of his life.
Get ready for the new third world America, folks, because as long as these freakshows are even given a passing glance, our achievments, our way of living exists only by sheer luck.
It's the Sierra Club that's 'bullsh*t...those of us that would like to see energy independence are being held hostage by communist, tree-hugging freaks...enough of these people. Enough. (Do they get any taxpayer money? If so, WHY?)
So many environmentalists; so few baseball bats... :-)
Same reason any freakshow movement that wouldn’t get a dime in a truly free country gets taxpayer money: Political pull and political benefits for the politicians who support them. When dictatorship finally comes to America, who do you think the bullyboys of the new regime are going to be?
“..BP has been on this for some time....”
Yes Sir. They have.
I recently went to work as an independent engineeer/project manager to BP’s BioFuels group, but I come out of the oil/gas/pipeline industry; For the past few months before BP, I was primarily working in the Eagle Ford Shale trend in South Texas. Needless to say, I follow this business pretty closely, but usually focus on the mid-stream/pipeline work the most. This BioFuels thingy is a pretty interesting effort, but I just don’t see it as anything more than a supplement to the oil/gas industry. What really gets me the most is the amount of dis-information that’s being spewed as “fact”. Diesel moves this country and no amount of “tree hugging” is going to change that. This whole environmental movement today is now just a tool in the hands of the communists hell-bent on destroying this country. And if you say anything, you’re labelled a “baby seal killer” or a “bambi hater”, etc. by the left. It’s got to come to a head soon. The country just simply cannot survive otherwise.
I retired from BP’s Naperville Research Center last year.
The best place I have ever worked and I have had some nice positions.
Super safe, no short cuts, never and that was before the event in the gulf.
Good, competent and friendly people. Well maybe not everyone but most.
Perhaps I was fortunate to land in the just right spot?
“”I dont think a yearly budget has been agreed to since 2008.””
That’s right - we’ve gone without a budget for FY 2010, FY 2011 and FY 2012... The FY 2009 would have been done before the 2008 election so there hasn’t been one passed since obozo took office? It just doesn’t seem possible, does it? Right there everyone is in violation of their oaths to uphold the constitution.
I did catch some later news today and now it’s more clear that everything is on hold/extended for 2 months. I guess it was after the Senate voted that the reporting made more sense. To say that anything makes sense coming out of DC is really stretching it tho’.
“”All I can figure out is that we have a majority of people in this country now who do not believe there will ever be a financial come-uppance, and just dont care what happens if there is.””
Pretty much captures it correctly, I’m afraid. Sadly, the Congress isn’t about to DO anything about it either. There is so much on their plate for immediate action to CORRECT a lot of what’s been happening and they are simply paying lip service to it all.
We need to hear SHOUTING in the House and in the Senate - even furniture throwing - like some countries have in their legislative sessions. For goodness sake - let’s see some emotion - anything beside reading off prepared pieces of paper by someone on their staffs. Let’s see some ANGER and RESOLVE!
