And, big deal. Is this really an issue? I don’t think so. He’s entitled to it and so, he’s taking it. Not a one of us would do anything differently, including those making a big issue out of this.
I agree.
I noticed an older FR thread on Gov. Perry’s pension. This article explains the “80” rule.
I expect many school superintendents are earning a much higher salary (and with much less to show for it). The base pay (with many benefits beyond salary) for the Dallas Superintendent of Schools is $332,832.
Gov. Perry is the executive of the 13th largest economy in the world, a state of 25,000,000 (and growing).
I think its a big deal. If it was Sarah Palin. She would’ve reduced her own takeout. The difference from a reformer to a establishment
It's unlikely any of us in the "Private" sector would have that opportunity. Employees who retire under their company sponsored Defined Benefit pension plans are not rehired by the same company. That's double dipping - employee salary + employee pension.
The only exception to that rule is when the employee is hired as a temporary private consultant or contractor.
We have a new Macomb County Executive (new position) who is doing the exact same thing. For years he served as a Macomb County sherrif officer, then was elected as the chief Macomb County Sherriff.
While county sheriff last year he ran for and was elected the Executive Comm position. He immediately retired from his sheriff's job, collected $376,000 lump sum payment (from the county) and started receiving his $74,000 retirement pension (from the county) along with his $139,000 salary as Exec. Comm (from the county).........
Again, no where in the private sector would this be allowed to happen......
True. He’s 61 he’s drawing his retirement. Half the people in this country are taking their SS at 62.
You might have a point if the pension funds were fully funded. But they're not.
Public Pensions in Texas As Of September 2011
I'm sure Texans won't mind having their taxes raised to cover these shortfalls so government workers can continue to collect their pensions.
As someone who is still undecided on a candidate, I was hoping Perry would make a comeback in the polls. But he should be a leader on the issue of pension reform, not just another follower.
Totally agree and it’s peanuts anyway compared to all the illegal financial finagling by congress critters.
Who would even bring something like this up?
“...including those making a big issue out of this.”
And who are those making a big issue out of this? Texas democrats through their liberal newspapers including the Star-Telegram. Same folks making a big issue of providing accomodations for the Perry family after the fire at the Governor’s mansion.
It’s not working, though.
