Newt was a great strategist and tactician back in the day and he remains a great rhetorician. Newt's loyality to Reagan conservatism helped create the Contract With America and that was a big part of the success of the Republican Revolution of the '90s.
In the last decade, however, its obvious that Newt's been pushing a more of a technocratic big govt Republican agenda and that does nothing to advance conservatism.

I agree on all of your points. He seems to be going through some sort of personal reformation though. Hopefully it is not just tailoring the message to the times, but rather an old warhorse recovering his wits, mission and resolve. Watching.
