Supreme Court to mess with Texas By: Alex Isenstadt December 15, 2011 04:56 PM EST
Redistricting is a process fraught with lawsuits but few make it all the way to the United States Supreme Court.
Texass plan has, and its path to the nations highest court has been a long one stretching from the backrooms of the state Capitol to a San Antonio courtroom. The stakes are high: how the nine justices rule will help determine who controls the House of Representatives.
Heres POLITICOs guide to the Texas redistricting battle.
Road to high court
Earlier this year, the GOP-controlled Texas Legislature approved a Republican-friendly redistricting plan that positioned the party to win as many as three of the four new seats being gained in the current round of reapportionment. The Justice Department and minority-rights groups sued, arguing in federal court that the map diminished the voting power of Hispanics in violation of the Voting Rights Act. While a Washington court waited to hear the case, a San Antonio-based panel of three federal judges was tasked with drawing an interim redistricting plan for the 2012 election.
The San Antonio courts map was decidedly more friendly to Democrats than the GOP-drawn plan. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, a Republican, filed a lawsuit with the United States Supreme Court seeking to have the temporary map stayed. Late last week, the court agreed to hear the case, with oral arguments set for Jan. 9.
Why Texas?
Texas is tailor-made for redistricting litigation. With a booming Hispanic population that accounted for nearly two-thirds of the states growth over the past decade and a sizable number of black voters, the state has a diverse citizenry meaning legislators were under pressure to accommodate an array of interests when crafting the new plan.

No, shoot Politico.
People BETTER pay attention to this case. It will effect EVERY STATE LEG.
NO MORE STATES RIGHTS!!!!
All you who hate Perry, he is the only one with a realistic view of how dangerous this current Federal Government really is to our freedoms.
Hey Paulettes, has your boy even bothered to mention this Constitution destroying fight?
What is POLITICO’S “guide” for the democrat controlled redistricting that was imposed in California?
21st century, and the US is still ****ed up by “race”. Are we ever going to get over that crap?
Why is it that they mess with Texas, but California is the most gerrymandered State in the Union, and they do nothing about California?
Our Hispanics are more the classy kind.
They will vote Republican because the ones I know, know what 0
is doing and know that keeping America FREE is the most important thing.
Prevail in court — end of story.
Thanks Sub-Driver.
Because California was not part of the Confederacy.
“Prevail in court end of story.”
Brilliant.
Diverse Citizenry my A**! It’s a dumping ground for Mexico & beyond. They want remittance money to prop up their sh*thole nation-states. “DIVERSE”- we could make it so by importing some 10 million more Asians,Latvians, Swedes,Poles or the Copts getting slaughtered in Egypt!
How does race under-representation become "discrimination" or "disenfranchisement", when LEGAL Citizens (regardless of color) still get one vote and WHY do races and ethnicities seek to have SPECIAL treatment of their "Rights" (whatever that means, since we're all Americans, under the same Constitutional Repubublic)?
Are we ever going to get over that crap?
Unlikely! The Karma Police are very patient. Why it ain’t happening to the Dutch is my question.
Well said.
However, that's what we're living with TODAY; due to allowing political correctness and the Progressives keeping MINORITIES and ILLEGALS "ON THE PLANTATION", with other people's money.
“Why is it that they mess with Texas, but California is the most gerrymandered State in the Union, and they do nothing about California?”
It is gerrymandered by rats.
“Supreme Court to mess with Texas”
That much is not new. Remember the sodomy laws? The supreme court is out to screw up everything Americans. Better get used to it.
The headline is a bit misleading...they are going to REVIEW the decision of a lower court that messed with Texas.
Their ‘guide’? Why....any damned thing the leftists want when they want it, of course....as it as always been....while ignoring any inconvenient facts to the contrary of what leftists believe.
“What is POLITICOS guide for the democrat controlled redistricting that was imposed in California?”
