Well this is really confusing....no Iraqi thank you. Humm, jeez, and after all those hundreds of marches across Iraq and the entire moslum world for that matter, cheering the death of Osama, one would expect an outpouring of gratefulness towards US.

oh wait, yep...their Constitution states...NO LAW SHALL CONTRADICT ISLAM.

Now its understandable.

Despite what Panetta said, this was NOT the “end of the war”. Using his distortion, the US is still at war with Germany from WWII.

Gulf War II began on March 20, 2003, the WAR ended with the creation of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA)on April 21, 2003.

From that point, the Iraqi Occupation was in effect. It lasted only until January 31, 2005, when Iraqis elected the Iraqi Transitional Government. It was doubly over with the return to sovereignty of the elected Iraqi government on May 20, 2006.

The U.S.-Iraq Status of Forces Agreement was approved by the Iraqi government on December 4, 2008.

So, Mr. Panetta, congratulations, under your leadership the US military is shipping up to leave a reasonably friendly country and head home. There are a whole bunch of other overseas military deployments that could be ended as well, in that our forces are mostly staying there out of inertia, instead of any real purpose.

But ending a war? Nah. The war ended a long time ago. You were in between jobs when that happened.

“That will come later.”

That’s right; in a year or two the mercenary army we’ve left there (contractors) will probably be leaving like that.

You can bet that the leaders of Iran were watching... and waiting!

I am not surprised in the least that no Iraqi leaders showed up. Those that said goodbye did so a long time ago, and Iraq has its own business to do once we are gone.

A few changes. First of all, the US being there kept a lot of revenge down to a low simmer. But there is a lot of payback due a lot of people once we leave. And there is likely to be a lot more hanging going on as well.

The Iraqi military has long been good enough to protect their country from internal threats, and they are doing what they need to do to protect Iraq from external threats as well. They may well choose to become like the Turkish military, and defend the country from radicals trying to take over the government. By coup, if necessary.

The Kurds remain one of the US’s (and quietly, Israel’s) better allies, and they are also keeping their hand in the Iraqi government. This can do much to keep down any stupid Arab wild hairs the Shiites or Sunnis concoct.

And the Sunnis will probably try it on, sooner than later, so expect to see some unpleasantness there.

As soon as the last troops are out, all hell will break loose, fomented courtesy the Islamic Republic of Iran, which will quickly move in to take over.

Yep, it's Vietnam and the Cambodian killing fields all over again, courtesy of the same liberal murderers that did it last time.

The Iraqi final farewell to our troops was don’t let the door hit you in the azz on the way out. When the Iranians take over their oil fields in a few months they can call 1-800-kiss our azz.

You were in between jobs when that happened.

You are much too polite with Leon. As I recall, former Clinton Chief of Staff Panetta got the hell out of D.C. just ahead of a widening Congressional investigation into campaign funds; most likely the result of a gentlemen’s agreement. This was shortly after he negotiated, at Clinont's direction, the lease of the Long Beach Naval Station to China.

One wonders to what extent DoD and CIA have been compromised in recent years.
