Interesting recap of the history of the 1990's from someone who was right there in the trenches.

I implore everyone read the article in its entirety. The precarious position of Speaker requires the ability to see, think and act with intelligence - not timidity.

Tony Blankley and Dick Morris get it.

"I was amused to see Gov. John Sununu, President George H. W. Bush's chief of staff and a current Romney supporter, criticize Gingrich last week.

I remember back in 1990, just after Gingrich had become the GOP whip, President Bush, urged on by Gov. Sununu, was about to break his campaign pledge and raise taxes, which eventually cost him his re-election bid against Bill Clinton. It was Gingrich who opposed it. "

Good article. Thanks.

It will be so nice when all the also rans have dropped out so we can end this farce of comparing Newt to people with no chance.

The only one Newt should be compared to is Romney, since it’s going to be one of them two, and the sooner we get to that point the better.

Thank you for posting!

I challenge people to go to Newt’s website and read what he wants to do, and then let’s talk about what we like and do not like about policy. Isn’t that what we really need to talk about? I like almost all of his policies. I believe he will bring those same leadership skills he developed in the 90’s.
I am excited about a Newt Presidency and about him possibly picking....Santorum or Perry or Bachman as VP!

Newt was my congress critter for several years, including the time he was Speaker. My observations were that as he moved to the top, he also moved to the left (BUT certainly not into 0bama's neighborhood of karl marx strasse) when he got to the top, he usually stepped in it with both feet and then proceeded to track it in on the carpet.

There were countless times I thought to myself "he is a professional politician, and he said that?!?".

"It's clear now that we should have followed his advice."

Imagine if they HAD.
No Bill Clinton...

It was NEWT who saw through it all.

Encouraging article. Very interesting - looks like Gingrich, under “outsider” Reagan's tutelage, probably learned the art of negotiating with the opposition, something at which Reagan was a master.

Reagan knew some things were less important and negotiable and other things were not. He was not just combative. Sounds like Gingrich is the same way. But there were certain things Reagan on which would never compromise. In assessing the “ayes” and “nays” in his battles with Congress, Reagan knew he had something more if needed than the “ayes” in Congress. Reagan had a trump card that he would use when necessary – the American people. I’ve never seen an POTUS go directly to the American people the way Reagan did (maybe FDR, before I was around).

Reagan, when necessary, would bypass the Washington establishment, state his case to the American people (it was always a case for their benefit), and tell them if they believed in what he was trying to do (for example, let them keep more of their own hard-earned money to use it as they saw fit instead of giving it away to some distant Washington bureaucrat who would spend it as he saw fit), they should call their Congressmen and women and tell them how they need to vote (for the tax-cut, for example) and they would watch how they voted. He usually got the votes. This is obviously a rare trait in our leaders in Washington because so few do it (actually Obama did earlier and very effectively). I hope Gingrich understands the effectiveness of going directly to this powerful extra and usually winning vote in Congress - the American people.

Now someone has to compare that with Mitt accomplishments.

What has he done to/for America anyway? - other than bring his big gov’t/socalistic mindset to America. What hillary wanted, what Mitt accomplished and what Barry followed.
