Gingrich on numerous past occasions: FDR was the greatest president of the 20th century

If we’re all going to get in a tizzy over Mitt Romney’s past comments to the effect that he is a progressive, I think it only fair that we also work ourselves into a tizzy over some of Gingrich’s past comments — to wit, his repeated praise of big-government glorifier Franklin Delano Roosevelt, his warm words for Service Employees International Union head Andy Stern and his claim that he is a “Realpolitik Wilsonian.”

Two videos, both via The Blaze. In the first, Gingrich raves about FDR — over and over again. In the second, he proclaims himself a Wilsonian. In context, the latter doesn’t seem quite as concerning as the former, but some undertone still strikes me as ominous.

It's 2008 all over again. The GOP is in the process of pushing out any conservative and all we're left with is "republican progressives". Oddly I feel I know more about Newt and Romney than I do about Baraq, and he's been in office for 4 years.

The longer this primary process continues the more I get a sinking feeling.

FDR, the father of the cluster f*** called social security?

That was a stupid thing to say Newt, downright stupid!

Newt is making me sicker by the day.

If i am forced to get a RINO - i prefer Huntsman. At least he is honest.

>>>>>Newt is the father of "big gov't conservatism",

There is no such thing as big govt conservatism. Newt espouses big govt Republicanism. That makes Newt more like Nixon, TR and the Bush's, than it does Reagan.

Conservatism is synonymous with the Founders, limited govt and the Constitution. Conservatism has nothing in common with big govt liberalism and its progressive policies.

Newt never said he agreed with FDR or the New Deal. He said that FDR was the greatest president for getting his ideas done. He is probably correct. If I were Newt, I would have never even said that, but Newt often puts his foot in his mouth by talking too much.

A perfectly reasonable position. If you want reality Reagan was a great president and stood up to the Soviet Union, but it was George Bush Sr. who brilliantly managed the actual breakup of the Soviet Union.

WW II easily was the greatest event in 20th Cenury World history. Many would pick Roosevelt.

Hard to figure. How can a guy who loved Reagan love FDR? They’re like polar opposites.

If you search Newt with Nelson Rockefeller's name afterward that might give more insight. Newt is not the conservative that some Freepers are pretending he is.

So what. What did he say about gays in the military? Abortions? That’s what counts.

What is a war or 2 ?

Wish more could see this.

The man has some serious shortcomings in the ‘conservative’ direction.

Why can’t we get someone who’s actually proud to be a conservative, not ‘progressive’, or with a minor in ‘reaching around the aisle’.

>> You may not like SS but FDR was the last President with the balls to formally declare war and win against 2 world class foes in shorter time that our present wars. >>

And it’s in an historical context that Newt said that. Stupid to say - and no doubt trying to vex folks who assumed he would say Reagan. Newt’s worst enemy is not what he’s done - it’s what he said. It’s also his best asset.

Tragic flaw I think they call it.

I agree. It’s presiding over and winning WWII that pushes Roosevelt over the top with most historians. His legacy would not have been nearly so high without the war in that the country was still mired in the Depression before armed forces spending began ramping up.
