Of all the Republican Candidates, isn’t Perry the only one who has a background in farming? I’m guessing he’s the only one who served as a Secretary of Agriculture in a state.

Yes. Perry was born to West Texas tenant cotton farmers. After graduating from TX A&M and serving 5 years in the Air Force (flew C-130s) he returned to farming/ranching, represented his district in the TX House and then ran and was elected TX AG Commissioner in 1989.

He was reelected and served as AG Commissioner until running for TX Lt. Gov in 1998 (Perry was the first Republican Lt. Gov. elected in TX since Reconstruction).

Gov. Rick Perry also is the first TX governor to cut general revenue spending since WWII.
