"How do we stop Newt?"
I've now been asked that question by a lot of conservatives. It's not that I'm the go-to guy for that sort of question. Rather, one gets the sense that many "establishment" conservatives are asking everybody that question in staff meetings, at the chiropodist, even at the McDonald's drive-through.
The other night while having drinks with some prominent conservatives, I said I thought there was a significant chance that Gingrich will not only win the nomination but that he might be the next president. Going by their expressions, I might as well have said I put a slow-acting poison in their cocktails.
Not surprising then that there are more knives out for Gingrich than in a Ginsu infomercial. For instance, former New Hampshire Gov. John H. Sununu has been nurturing a grievance against Gingrich since he was White House chief of staff in 1990. For two decades he's been like Inigo Montoya in "The Princess Bride." "Hello, my name is John Sununu. You destroyed my boss' presidency; prepare to die."
But Sununu's barbs bounce off Gingrich, as has George Will's more brutal rhetorical artillery fire. Conventional weapons are useless against Newtzilla.

I dislike both Newtzilla and Romney the Robot, but either one beats IDAK. His “Crush, Kill, Destroy” policy on our economy must be stopped.
Newtzilla. Ha! It just captures perfectly the establishments reaction to the possibility....
Now I need to scrounge up the old “Godzilla v. Bambi” video on Youtube...!
The beltway bunch still doesn't get the resentment hangover from last Republican presidential nomination. More to the point, Gingrich benefits enormously by being the last obvious 'not McRomney' candidate.
More to the point, a whole lotta' folks were & still are pissed off over McCain being the candidate in '08 and see Romney as more of the same-o, same-o. That and Romney's 'likeablity' factor is in the basement.
“... But many feel that a Gingrich victory might be scarier than a GOP defeat...such fear is a compliment because it shows that he’s a “change agent” threatening the status quo.”
And that, my friends, is why the establishments of both political parties are in major meltdown mode. Gingrich has said he will overturn the way business is done in Washington, D.C.
He knows where all the skeletons are hidden.
He knows where all the bodies are buried.
He is as relentless as a terrier on the scent of a pest to be annihilated.
Of course the establishment is crapping their pants.
“How do we stop Newt?”
How do we stop the miserable bastard currently in the White House?
sfl
Tokyo and Krauthammer are beside themselves. I am loving every minute of it. Go Newt.
!
“Gingrich has said he will overturn the way business is done in Washington, D.C.”
But, but - - Newt is a ‘Greenie”.
What might convince the Conservative voter that Newt won’t grow government, won’t grow EPA and similar agencies?
Jonah’s got it right!
The pundits and insiders are in a snit and not just over Gingrich, as Goldberg points out. They think Perry and Bachmann aren’t smart enough and can’t beat obama. Their Romney isn’t cutting it, so now they want to stop Newt Gingrich....LOL.
Oh dear, and these are the same SNOTTY BELTWAY INSIDERS who worried that Sarah Palin would run and they did everything to stop her, so that she wouldn’t derail their boy Romney.
GO GINGRICH!
YES! Me too.
Both were dead set against Sarah Palin running. Now deal with Gingrich!
Unless you have a crystal ball that can see into the future, no candidate is a “sure thing”.
McCain: "Conservatives will be saddled another candidate just like us."
“This helps explain why Newtzilla is so formidable. In order to stop him, you need to explain to very anxious GOP voters that the times don’t require him”
Good sum-up.
May I note that those who do not learn from history, ......
Are you paying the least bit attention to his solicitation of ideas for regulation and EO repeals, etc. for the new Contract with America?
