Canada will pull out of the Kyoto protocol on climate change, Environment Minister Peter Kent said on Monday, dealing a symbolic blow to the troubled global treaty.
Canada will become the first country to formally withdraw from Kyoto, which it says is badly flawed because it does not cover all major emitters of greenhouse gasses, notably the United States and China.

As weve said, Kyoto for Canada is in the past We are invoking our legal right to formally withdraw from Kyoto, Kent told reporters after returning from talks in Durban, South Africa, on extending the protocol.
He gave no details on when exactly Ottawa would pull out, but said Canada would be subject to enormous financial penalties under the terms of the treaty unless it withdrew.
The announcement will do little to help Canadas growing reputation as an international renegade on the climate. Green groups awarded the country their Fossil of the Year award for its performance in Durban.

Bump!
Thank God there is still one country were common sense prevails.
Yes, and a Republican President would be obliged to blame a U.S. withdrawal on Chinese and Indian non-participation, for the same reason. Our population believes, passionately in most cases, in the AGW creed, since they have not been exposed to the truth. Canada reached the point where they would have substantial financial liabilities, so they used U.S. and Chinese non-participation as a pretext. What would you have Harper do, expose himself as a sceptic and commit political hari kari? Surveys in both Canada and the U.S. reveal that the environment is among the top three political concerns, thanks largely to our state-controlled education systems.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Americans start sneaking across the border into Canada. We’ve lost this country. IMHO.
Canada’s ENTIRE national identity is in defining themselves as different from the United States. Almost always this has meant being to our left (such as in military, health care, etc.). But now they are FAR TO OUR RIGHT on Global Warming.
There is a lesson there for America...if we can figure it out.
Glorious and free.
Worst case scenario: Milder winters! Mllions of acres of newly arable land! THE HORROR!
As economic policy, the Kyoto Accord is a disaster. As environmental policy it is a fraud
Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada.
wish we had a POTUS who could have the judgment and foresight to say this!! (even though we’re not in the Kyoto Treaty too damned many politicians pay lip service to the CAGW b.s.
This is Americas fault because...because...because somehow it just has to be!

No, hon. It’s Bush’s fault. ‘Cause....well...well.....it just IS. Know what I’m sayin’? *snicker*
Where do I get my international climate renegade t-shirt?
I'd wear it with pride!
“Who gave them any standing? Who elected them?”
Hmmm let’s think...could it be....SOROS???;)
They're not denying anything, they're merely saying they don't want to flush a ton of money down the corrupt "global warming" toilet.
From the CBS story:
The protocol, initially adopted in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997, is aimed at fighting global warming. Canada's previous Liberal government signed the accord but did little to implement it and Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government never embraced it.

Monday's announcement was not a surprise. Canada faced international criticism at the recent climate talks in South Africa amid reports it would pull out of Kyoto. Kent had said previously that signing the Kyoto Protocol on climate change was one of the previous government's biggest blunders.
Congratulations to Stephen Harper.
Canada's liberal Democrats get spanked like little girls once again.
OH CANADA! To our freinds in the Great White North, THANK YOU!
Oilers and Jets certainly are greenhouse gas makers....
You need to temper your celebration. Just last week Harper’s government was hailing the new multi-lateral negotiations which would bring China and India into the mix and impose CO2 controls on every country. He’s playing both sides of the issue. In his heart Harper knows GW is BS, but he is constantly triangulating on this and other issues instead of taking a clear conservative stance.
