I’m thinking more along the lines of The Forest Of The Impaled, with pig grease on the stakes.

Im thinking more along the lines of The Forest Of The Impaled
At Omdurman Churchill, as a member of the 21st Lancers, charged through a massed dervish formation with sword and lance. One of the last great horse and sword charges in history. Impaled a few, then the lancers wheeled around and charged back through the Dervishes again just to be sure they were completely broken.
Jean de Valette is another in that mold. A holy man of faith and devotion. When war came he put down his prayer book and put on his armor. When confronted with the Turkish desecration of Christian bodies after the fall of Fort St. Elmo had his Turkish prisoners decapitated and fired their heads into the Turkish lines. But then after the war went on to care for the poor, build cities, churches and hospitals.
I don't want a Vlad the Impaler who is stuck on crazy. I want a Churchill who can turn it on when dealing with a foreign enemy and off at home as needed.
