Gingrich stands by ‘invented’ Palestinians remark

DES MOINES, Iowa — Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich said he supports a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians that includes two separate states, but he did not step back Saturday from his assertion that Palestinians are an “invented” people, an incendiary comment that infuriated one side in the Mideast peace process.

The burden to show a willingness to reach a peace accord with the Israelis lies squarely with the Palestinians, he said.

“When the president keeps talking about a peace process while Hamas keeps firing missiles into Israel, if we had a country next to us firing missiles, how eager would we be to sit down and negotiate?” Gingrich told a veterans forum in Des Moines, before participating in a nationally televised debate with six other GOP candidates vying for the presidential nomination.

Palestinian officials reacted furiously on Saturday to Gingrich’s assertion, accusing the Republican presidential hopeful of incitement and staging a “cheap stunt” to court the Jewish vote.

In the American context being an “invented people” isn’t a problem. Those who think it is are just strange.

He’s absolutely correct.

The true “Palestinian” tribe was killed off a couple of thousand years ago.

The current “Palestinians” are largely Arabians that were cast out to establish a neo-Palestinian state. In the past few decades, their goal was to surround Israel and destroy Israel.

A large portion of the people who settled the “Palestine” area were nomadic for some time and roamed from nation to nation, being kicked out of each nation because they were a nefarious people.

The current “Palestinians” have no more right to call themselves “Palestinians” and to demand land as theirs historically, than if you and I were to claim that we are Nez Perce and to demand a county in Montana. Imagine if we did, and in order to obtain that land, we started killing the residents of surrounding counties. How far do you think that would get us? Actually, in this country and time, we’d probably win.

And the sober half of the moderator team, Clinton stooge and Obama amplifier Steffy, briefly stepped in as spokesman for terror by saying that Newt’s position would fuel terror for years to come.
A very shameful and cowardly argument, that. No different than saying we brought 9/11 on ourselves.
Yeah, from now on they’re going to switch from “allahu akbar” to “Newt Gingrich is making me do this!”

"I’m not a Newt supporter for pres. But he is right on with this one!"

You echo precisely what Mark Steyn was expressing yesterday on NRO.

"One thing I like about him is that he knows so much more about so many more things that once in a while he can’t help blurting out something that no poll-tested, focus-grouped, finger-in-the-windy frontrunner would ever say in a thousand years. For example..."

Well, if the terrorists are pissed at Gingrich that's a point in his favor as far as I'm concerned.

We need more "screw you!" in our foreign policy.

The problem with Newt’s comment, the way I recall hearing it, is that the term Palestinian wasn’t used until 1977 —

Wrong. The term was used way before that.

“Newt is absolutely right on this and he should NOT back down!”

Interesting to daydream;
Let’s say Newt is elected, would he keep this perspective?

I’ve seen waaay too many conservatives get corrupted or coerced by “other” forces.

“if the terrorists are pissed at Gingrich”

The first line of the article says Gingrich wants to give them an independent state. So why are they pissed?

I’m no fan of Perry but he at least is very clear about his opposition to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

Why give the invented people an invented state?

In the thick of Saturday’s debate, Newt Gingrich struck back at the Palestinian Authority’s chief negotiator Saeb Erekat who told CNN that “Mark my words…these statements of Gingrich’s will be the ammunitions and weapons of the bin Ladens and the extremists for a long, long time.”

“How would he know the difference?” Gingrich snapped.

THIS is why Gingrich is the best man to be our nominee on that stage. He is unafraid of the islamists and the fears that we will incite them.

As Rush says, how can you inflame people who fly planes full of people into buildings full of people?

Newt is right—there never was a “Palestinian” people—That land was just part of other empires—the people are Arabs—left overs from the armies of the Turks, Egyptians and others. Go Newt! he says what needs to be said.

Many of us have thought of Newt as a nerdy, blowhard, career politician. I am in awe of how much he has lived and loved life with continued curiosity and wonder; authoring dozens of books on multiple topics. Amazing that one individual - from humble beginnings could amass so much knowledge. Only in America!!!!
