DES MOINES, Iowa — White House hopeful Newt Gingrich took the gloves off Saturday as he defended his frontrunner status in a feisty debate among the narrowing field of Republican presidential contenders.
Faced with a barrage of attacks on his conservative credentials, history of adultery and controversial remarks calling Palestinians an "invented" people, the former House speaker played tough and kept his cool as he stood his ground.
Slammed by his rivals for "stirring up trouble," Gingrich insisted that "the Palestinian claim to a right of return is based on a historically false story," adding: "These people are terrorists. They teach terrorism in their schools."
"I think sometimes it is helpful to have a president of the United States with the courage to tell the truth," Gingrich said. "Just as it was when (Ronald) Reagan went around his entire national security apparatus to call the Soviet Union an evil empire."
Gingrich was also not afraid to launch a biting personal attack after main rival Mitt Romney called him a "career politician" and Washington insider who does not know what it takes to fix the sputtering US economy.
"I spent my life in the private sector. I understand how the economy works," Romney said before ridiculing Gingrich for supporting mining missions on the moon and changing child labor laws so kids can work as janitors at school.
Gingrich shot back at the former Massachusetts governor: "Let's be candid. The only reason you didn't become a career politician is you lost to (former senator) Teddy Kennedy in 1994."
Romney suffered a self-inflicted blow later in the debate when he challenged Texas Governor Rick Perry to a $10,000 bet over what Romney wrote about health care.

Newt is surprising me.
Early on I didn’t think he’d gain traction.
When you take the gloves off with Newt you better have good ammunition.
It seems Perry also did well in these debates. Finally the BS has stopped and some truth is coming out. That’s what we need after 3 years of Obama lies.Stop playing around and expose those Obama lies.
Romney then admitted that he would have been a career politician if he had beat Ted Kennedy!
This was the night where Romney lost.
Romney spent decades trying to buy elective office(s). He failed except for one primary win (senate) and a Gubernatorial win (Mass).
He refers to his private sector experience as ‘creating jobs’. His experience was moving money around to people who may have created jobs as a result. He did not save enterprises or build them from the ground up (as Herman Cain did).
Romney lives in his own dream world - where he is the ‘star’. Messianic complex if you ask me.
Is there any doubt Gingrich wouldnt nail down Obama? He actually nailed down Romney last night with Romney admitting that if he had won against Fat Ted, that then, he would have been a career politician.
Even with the ongoing battle with Perry, Perry never could nail down Romney, who is as slick as crap off a hot tin roof.
I have a feeling Romney may not be one of the last two standing. He really stepped in it tonight. Look for Perry and Newt to be the choices and Newt the winner.
Newt did really well last night and the media hates him, so that’s a big plus!
Does he have warts and wrinkles and past sins? You betcha, but no more than I have.
Newt's stepped in it a bunch of times so he knows what it smells like and hopefully how to avoid it.
There is no doubt that Newt will take the fight to obummer and the best part will come when he is the President.
Imagine how America will respond to a President that loves his Country, that backs the Israelis, 100%, that calls palis, terrorists, that has the balls to get congress critters to shut down the 9th circus court...
It's exactly as Newt has said, the recession in America will begin to end on the evening of November 4, 2012 when the Country sees that it's only a matter of days before the one is headed back to chicago on his last free ride in the big Boeing 747, that looks like the plane that was once designated "Air Force One" but for this flight will be known as THE SALVATION OF AMERICA.

Whereas, Santorum and Bachmann, who like Perry are cemented in single digits, S and B are politically naive and keep attacking Gingrich.
Perry is smart enough to know it’s time to play for VP.
Yep, after last night I am feeling more at ease with Newt as the GOP candidate.
Love him or not Newt is more than qualified to take the 3:00 AM call. He will restore respect for America around the world. Barry Soetoro has done a lot of damage and will continue to do damage for the next 12 mos.

Whether you like Newt or not you have to admit watching the MSM moderators trying to take Newt down is entertaining. This ain’t his first rodeo and he knows all their tricks. I honestly don’t think they know how to handle him, but their ego and arrogance won’t admit it.
Together, with Newt, we will bring Obama’s War on America to an end..... we will take our country back and set the stage for our grandchildren to have a better future.
