Big day at Boeing: Contract flies

Boeing's Machinists voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to approve the deal announced a week ago, providing an immediate economic boost and the prospect of aerospace job security in the Puget Sound region.

The vote was 74 percent in favor, sealing five years of labor peace for Boeing by extending the current Machinists contract to September 2016.

In that period, Boeing plans to pump out jets at unprecedented rates. Beyond that, the deal commits Boeing to build the new version of its single-aisle jet due to enter service in 2017 — the 737 MAX — in Renton.

Last month, a report commissioned by Gov. Chris Gregoire estimated that 8,000 direct jobs and another 12,000 indirect jobs in Washington state were at stake with the MAX decision, as well as $500 million a year in tax revenue.

The yes vote is also expected to end the National Labor Relations Board case against Boeing, as the union said it would withdraw its complaint and the NLRB has signaled it will then drop the charge.

“That we allow labor unions to exist in the United States with the protection and encouragement of the government is admission of the general belief that Karl Marx was right.”

Well stated. But at least we’re moving in the right direction. Believe it or not, 70 years ago today, in the NY Times, was an article about gas station attendants in the NY City area calling off their planned strike because Pearl Harbor was attacked. It sure was nice of them not to strike, but WHAT THEY HELL were they doing being unionized in the first place.

Unions are an ugly, un-American, entity, that must be DESTROYED, by any means necessary.

Agreed. A hundred years ago there was a need for labor unions and as time has passed that need has greatly diminished. Today they are not needed, what is needed is a right to work law in every state.

As you say, that our government protects and encourages labor unions is outrageous but it would also be outrageous if our government banned them. Let the worker freely decide if they want to pay a union to forward that unions political agenda and the union thug leaders largess, if that was the case I suspect union days would be numbered.

I thought I was the only one who remembered B-1 Bob. What a travesty. An election stolen from one of the most intelligent conservatives by a totally idiot liberal.
