Romney camp in ‘near panic’ over Newt, and for very good reason

s Newt Gingrich a realistic threat to win the GOP nomination?

The Romney campaign certainly seems to think so. Ron Fournier, writing in National Journal, reports that “Romney’s campaign is in a state of near panic.” The campaign put together a conference call with reporters featuring prominent GOP officials who lambasted Gingrich in terms that you rarely hear within a political party:

“The speaker is running as a reliable and trusted conservative leader. What we’re here to say, with reluctance, but clearly, is he is not a reliable or trustworthy conservative leader,” Sen. Jim Talent told reporters on a conference call arranged by the Romney campaign.

After that bit of throat-clearing, former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu ventured beyond the bounds of a typical political attack, signaling how seriously — and, perhaps, desperately — the Romney camp is taking Gingrich’s rise. He called Gingrich’s criticism of Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget plan, beloved by most conservatives, “an effort of self-aggrandizement” and “the most self-serving anti-conservative thing one can imagine.”

He all but called Gingrich crazy. Saying the attack on Ryan’s plan is part of a pattern of unpredictable behavior that goes back to Gingrich’s days as speaker, Sununu termed it “the most perfect example of irrational behavior that you do not want in the commander-in-chief.

“I don’t think Newt Gingrich cares about conservative principles,” Sununu said. “Newt Gingrich cares about Newt Gingrich.”

Here are the polling numbers of the first four primary states, released yesterday by CNN, that inspired the MittFit:

The AJC is actually running radio ads now saying that they have heard the people's demand for more balanced reporting and that they have changed their format to include other viewpoints. In truth, they didn't hear it from their former readers. Instead, they were told by a marketing firm they hired after watching their circulation numbers plummet steadily over the last three decades. They were told that there was a huge surplus of the liberal drivel that they offered in the media market, and that they needed to offer something new and scarce if they wanted their numbers to increase. So now they are trying to con their target audience that they suddenly have become conservative.

Rest assured knowing that the AJC will be endorsing Baraq Obama (and every other Democrat/Communist on the ballot)for election next Fall.

The irony of Sununu's statements is every criticism of Newt he makes is doubly true of Romney.

Literally, "the pot calling the kettle black" in real life.

It's Myth's Newt's turn! Nobody has the right to deny him the nomination. We OWE it to him.

There, fixed it.

Just seeing that Newt can get Mitt to sweat this much is joyous.

We haven't seen the Romney family this unified in defending another candidate since Reagan was running.

"""""This proves that Gingrich is not a Washington insider or establishment republican."""""

ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON. The Tea Party set the stage when our members took office in Congress, with NEWT there, the OLD establishment R's & D's, have MUCH TO BE AFRAID OF.

Newt will finish the job he started in 1984, he is the only one that knows how, and who.

same here! Mitt can do the country a service by reminding voters who Newt really is. Then he can go sit down and shut up.

Romney has been running for what 6 .. 7 years now...

He has what might be called "missionary zeal"...he will convert us all or wear out his bicycle trying.

RE: “And it would seem Mitt has also put together a collection of FReepers to lambast Gingrich.”

If this primary season is like the 2008 primary season you can count on it. And some of them will be paid campaign operatives such as the zotted Reaganesque.

Problem with Newt is the sleaze factor. He was cheating on his wife with a staffer at the same time he was going after Clinton and Lewinsky. And of course he was forced out of the Speakership and paid a big fine. Since then he moved to the Beltway and has become a pseudo-lobbyists with his fingers in every pie taking well over a million dollars from corrupt organizations like Freddie Mac. Newt is sloppy, disorganized, and corrupt. The GOP will down in flames if he is the Party nominee.
