Among the many outrageous things being said about Newt - the claim that he was having an affair while directing the impeachment attack on President Clinton is one of the most untrue. He may well have been having an affair during late 1998 and early 1999, but he was MIA after the 1998 election in terms of advocating for the impeachment of Clinton.

At the time I recall how conspicuous it was - Rogan, et. al. (the "House managers") had to carry the ball and Newt was effectively muted on the subject. I thought then, and suspect now that he was being blackmailed by Clinton, who had knowledge of Newt's affair and it was used to keep him at a reduced and almost invisible profile with respect to the impeachment issue. Had Newt been able to advocate freely, I'm not certain that the Senate would have fulfilled their duty to try the case after actually looking at the evidence, but the chances would have been greater.

I am QUITE certain that the Senate would NOT have convicted or looked at the evidence.
