Gay and lesbian activists have accused the Salvation Army of discrimination against homosexuals because of its affirmation of traditional marriage and other Biblical viewpoints.
Its statement of faith does affirm that there is no scriptural support for same-sex unions as equal to, or as an alternative to, heterosexual marriage a position that has one LGBT activist urging people to skip giving to the Army altogether.
We are urging a boycott of the Salvation Army because it uses its selective interpretation of the Bible to promote discrimination against LGBT people in employment benefits and leadership positions within the Army, said Andy Thayer, co-founder of the Gay Liberation Network.
On its website, the Salvation Army offers its services to anyone without regard to sexual orientation.
While the words are nice, their actions speak volumes, said Bill Browning, editor-in-chief of the influential LGBT blog The Bilerico Project. They blatantly ignore the position statement and deny LGBT people services unless they renounce their sexuality, end same-sex relationships.
But with more shoppers still unsure about the economic recovery, such a boycott could have a devastating impact on donations that were already down as much as 10 percent after the official start on Thanksgiving Day.
Its a sad day in America when gay rights become more important than giving to the needy, said Brad Dacus, president of Pacific Justice Institute.
Heres a better idea, he added. The next time you pass a Salvation Army bell-ringer, why not thank the volunteer and put a little extra in the kettle to make up for the LGBT grinches who will not be giving this year?
I just sent in my annual Christmas contribution...think I’ll send in another and double it.
I’d say “Up yours, LGBT” but they’d enjoy it too much.
Means more money to SA from me.
Selfishness beyong description.
But it serves to show what the left really feels about poverty and charity.
I always give the bell ringers money. Guess I’ll double down.
Sounds like an excellent idea.
Yes, absolute truth as opposed to situational 'truth'.
The next SA bucket I see is getting a donation.
Boycotting the Salvation Army Thrift Store? Where are Occupy protestors going to shop for clothing now?
I rarely pass a bellringer without contributing something...
..and my husband brought home a request for a little girl the same age as our granddaughter....
..we enjoyed shopping for this little sweetie, whoever she is.
Hope the gay junk falls flat on its silly face.
I will double my donations for Salvation Army this year and will pass this on to all I can.
ditto
Stay strong Salvation Army, continue to stand with Gods word.
I support the Salvation Army by check several times a year, and donate to them rather than having a garage sale. Unlike Good Will, who over prices everything, they still pick up, too.
And I try to drop in a fiver every time I see a Salvation Army kettle.
Their lives are an abomination. It says so in Leviticus.
Most of them are atheists, I suppose.
Im giving double to the SA. United Way can kiss my ass.
Thatsa a good one, boss!
