Unfortunately, some Republicans are allowing themselves to be suckered into this political blackmail.

Many Freepers are falling into this trap also. The justification seems to be that a reduction in payroll taxes will lead to the collapse of SS. This reasoning is just hope and change. The rats want to make the tax freeloaders (mainly rat voters) pay even lower taxes while burdening the most productive with paying the payroll taxes for the freeloaders. Do not fall for this trap. No payroll tax reductions without reductions in benefits and other spending reductions. The preferred stance is no reduction in taxes without fundamental reform of SS.
