Marshmallows to be sent to N. Korea on Christmas Eve

2011-12-02 20:41

civic group led by a U.S. pastor said it will send marshmallows in balloons to North Korea on Christmas Eve.

Seoul USA, which annually launches balloons into North Korea containing religious material and daily necessities, said it will send thousands of marshmallow stars, Christmas trees and reindeer into the world’s most isolated country.

“The balloons are launched from secret locations on the South Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone,” the group said in a statement.

Eric Foley, co-founder and CEO of Seoul USA, said the idea came from stories from World War I when British and German soldiers sang carols and played soccer on Christmas Eve.

“We believe that for one night, it’s possible to share simple joy with the people of North Korea,” Foley said.

Balloon launching into North Korea is legal in South Korea.

Seoul USA conducts 50-60 balloon launches annually and last year sent 1.4 million flyers and 45,000 Bibles into the communist state.

what a great idea and what a sad image of the joyless people of North Korea receiving such a simple but for them extraordinary luxury

Sadly, from what I’ve heard, that is a significant calorie supplement for a day.

Back in the mid-80’s there were some ministries that started getting small Bibles into Russia and East Germany thru unusual methods (not sure if they tried balloons). They said that even if people didn’t read them they would sell them on the Black Market so they would still find a way into people’s hands.

I remember hearing a preacher saying back then that the Iron Curtain would fall in the next few years.

This was at the height of the Cold War and I thought he was crazy.

My father always thought it would be rock and roll, cola and a desire for good quality bluejeans that would collapse the wall eventually. In any case, whether it be music, marshmallow treats or bibles, the glimpse of something better out there, stays with a person.

Pyongyang is readying the missles, even as we write these comments.

Targets may be a little small, but the practice won’t hurt.

Toasted marshmellows, anyone?

What is this irresistible fetish with meddling in the affairs of other nation states. Missionaries are just another column for imperialism. Why don’t we lanch 99 red balloons with Bibles, Von Mises and Hayek on Chicago and Detroit. Then go have beer. No marshmallows please all those victims are morbidly overweight.
