Extra cops surrounded Occupy Boston yesterday amid growing frustration with the group by Mayor Thomas M. Menino, the day after protesters attempted to smuggle an industrial sink into the encampment and were blocked by police.
Meninos spokeswoman Dot Joyce said the mayor must protect the interest of all the citys residents, not just the 200 or so protesters.
The city is very concerned about the health and well-being of those in Dewey Square, however we will not allow them to build a neighborhood on that parcel of land, she said. We have been very generous, but we will continue to take action against those who are breaking the law.
Occupy protester Troy Davis said the citys ban on building materials and permanent structures being brought into the camp, which includes new tents, is designed to end the protest through attrition.
Just seems simple to me, Davis, 30, said. They might use some sort of legalese or such, but freezing us out seems to be the reason or the motivation. I dont know. I dont think the police are justified, -period.
However, another Occupy protester, Sage Radachowsky, 38, said he could see both sides.
I was also a bit let down with how we reacted last night, Radachowsky said. I think both sides over-reacted a bit. ... To my mind a tent is not a building material. A tent is a temporary shelter to keep people safe and warm against the elements for a short term. A sink? That might be debatable.
A fight between protesters broke out Thursday night and when police tried to intervene after one man allegedly assaulted one of the responding officers. After a chase, cops arrested Gary Williams, 26, of Quincy. He was released on personal recognizance after he pleaded not guilty to assault and battery on a police officer and disorderly conduct.
Williams was ordered to stay away from Dewey Square.
Williams also has an open case out of Framingham District Court, where Middlesex prosecutors said he was arraigned Oct. 17 for conspiracy to commit a crime, armed robbery and two counts of sexual conduct for a fee.

Oh the pain! The pain!

That’s probably what they’re doing. Rather than an eviction, attrition, letting them leave bit by bit. The weather might help though this yr has been slightly
warmer than usual. No snow or extreme cold right now.

Sounds like one of them lawbreakin’ Tea Partiers to me! :)
” ... attempted to smuggle an industrial sink into the encampment ..” They will prolly want that factoid included in their obituaries. And they prolly stole the sink. Another thing about the Occupy movement: no one involved has a sense of irony. None whatsoever. Nor do most of the journalists who write about.
Put up signs around the perimeter reading “Moonbat Zoo”. Trouble is, there’s a risk of contracting disease due to squalid conditions so I wouldn’t advise people
go in.
If any normal group said they wanted to camp out on a city park for six months...most cities would jump up and require a bond of $500k for clean-up operations at the end. Thats the comical part of this story. The city and its citizens will get stuck with a police, sanitation, and toxic clean-up bill at the end....going into the millions. It’s not fair for folks paying property taxes to get stuck for this.
Agreed; btw how would the city react if any of the following
were to set up their own Occupy movement?
Westboro Baptist Church
KKK
OR EVEN:
Tea Party (even if they were to be non-violent, which they would be...). Maybe Menino would say, “Yeah you can have
a rally but you can’t camp out. And you need to pay for
a permit.”
How about if any Occupy movement decided to camp out
in front of City Hall, for that matter? Mumbles would have to go by them every single workday. And smell them.
They seem to have forgotten that they are caretakers and trustees of the public’s property. ‘This is city owned land.’ No, mister official, that is the people's land that the city is a trustee of, a body elected to serve the people, not to serve itself.
But then again, the mentality that they are indeed serving the office instead of the people prevails throughout government today. They vote themselves pay raises, massive benefits packages, and retirements which in civilian life would require a high level position and nearly half a life of service, vs the typically paltry 20 years of government service.
And it appears that they are angry at these occupy groups who seem to be honing in on their largess of the public’s dollar, and perhaps even coming to realize that the costs for cleaning up after them is coming from a budget that is already stretched thin by the looting of public servants.
You cannot let even one fox into the henhouse.
