McDonald's Scores Magnificent Win in Happy Meal Debacle

Beginning today, all McDonald’s (MCD) restaurants in the City of San Francisco are forbidden by law to give away toys with Happy Meals.

McDonald’s response?

Eat it, California.

Though Policy Number 471.1 through 471.9 -- otherwise known as the "Healthy Meal Incentives Ordinance” -- will now, as noted by SF Weekly’s Joe Eskenazi, “require Happy Meal purchasers to make a 10-cent charitable donation to Ronald McDonald House in order to receive their coveted trinket,” the world’s largest fast food chain has pulled off a decisive, magnificent win.

"This law is not what my customers wanted or asked for, but the law's the law," local McDonald's franchisee Scott Rodrick told a reporter.

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

Instead of reducing fat, salt and sugar in children's meals and offering more fruits and vegetables, Rodrick's stores will adhere to the law Thursday by making customers pay an extra 10 cents for a Happy Meal toy. Customers who buy Happy Meals outside San Francisco, including just across the border in Daly City, will continue to get the toy gratis.

"It complies with the letter of the law," Rodrick said. The three other McDonald's franchise owners in the city have agreed to follow the same tack.

It’s unbelievable to think the what liberals who run SF think is the public’s business, and what is up to people’s own discretion/freedom of choice.

On the one hand, this city passed a food police type of ordinance against the Happy Meal. On the other hand, this city has a very liberal public nudity ordinance, and freely tolerates open nudity and open sex acts at gay oriented events such as Folsom Street fair.

On the one hand, they feel that they need to discourage unhealthy eating. On the other hand, they see no need to discourage public indecency or public sex activity.

Amazing thought process at work here.............

Sweet and gotcha! I’m exceedingly impressed. The city ordinance promotes the primary McDonald’s charity.

Would you like some carrot sticks with that?

Heeheeeheeee love it! When my kids were little they ate at McDonald’s maybe once or twice a year, but, I have to laugh myself silly at the CA morons who think they can screw with McDonalds.

Haven’t been to San francisco, I can honestly say I don’t understand the flap; there are no children there anyway.

Like banning Happy Meal toys in a retirement community, but a younger one full of deviants.

Hahaha! I love it. Kids still get their Happy Meal trinkets and a worthy charity gets additional $$$.

I would have solved the entire situation by donating happy meals to the wonderful OWS and then arresting them (the OWS) for contributing to the delinquency of the radically immature and stupid by encouraging the engorging of that absolutely degenerative garbage. (Mucho sarcasm, in concert with the SpanEnglish mode of operation in SF)

In San Francisco selling a kid a hamburger is more of a sin than teaching and indroctinating the same kid all sorts of knowledge and acceptance of perverted “lifestyles”.

I’m sure it would be okay with the brain trust if the kids got some kind of sex toy with their happy meal.

Oh yes, and all the healthy behavior at the bathhouses.

Unbelievable hypocrisy.

It’s commendable to give the proceeds to the Ronald McDonald House project that helps the families with lodging while their children are in treatment for cancer.

However, it would be really funny to have the money go for Free Fries Friday, when all kids could get free fries and a flier explaining freedom to the children. That would make the statist nannies heads explode.
