Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has surged to the largest national lead held by any candidate so far in the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters finds Gingrich on top with 38% of the vote. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is a distant second at 17%. No other candidate reaches double-digits.

The national survey of 1,000 Likely Republican Primary Voters was conducted on November 30, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

I agree. This thing has clearly turned and finally, we have a certain leader.

Romney is no match for Newt and he knows it. I am sure Romney will try, but Newt is too well prepared for Romney to outclass him. And Romney knows this better than anyone.

“Newt can take Romney in the Primary-—but he will have to struggle mightily to win the general.”

NO HE WON'T. Why does everyone fall for the MSM & establishment RINOs that Mitt has a better chance in the election?

Romney can't win the general. You need a fired up base to win. (Why McCain lost). Far more conservatives will stay home or not work to elect Willard than democrats who will vote for him.

Willard Romney = Juan McCain. The results would be the same. Maybe worse since Romney would probably have Huntsman as veep not Palin.

I suspect the single-digits folks will stay active until Florida is over (January 31).

They like the national platform for debates.

Paul will NEVER drop out: he participated in the 2008 debates through the very last debate in 2008, and he refused to withdraw from the primary race until after the last primary was over (even though McCain had clearly won the war).

Newt was awsome on Hannity last night in talking about how he would run the general campaign. He will talk about Obama being a south Chicago, Saul Alinsky community organizer. He is looking into the classes Obama taught, did he use Alinsky as a text? Bill Ayers will be on the table, and all Obama’s other Marxist connections and appointees. Asked what his “Are you better off than four years ago” question would be Newt will ask “can you stand four more years of this?”.

As for calling for 7 three hour debates with no moderator, he said he will spot Obama a teleprompter “just to make it fair”. He said he doesn't expect Obama to agree, at least at first, so he will schedule a speech everywhere Obama goes 4 hours later. Asked about how he could fight Obama spending a billion dollars to smear him, his answer was it depends on your opinion of the American people, ultimately a billion dollars worth of lies is still a billion dollars of lies.

If Newt's the nominee this is going to be a no holds barred, bare knuckle campaign.

I'm primarily venting here but it stinks that Newt and adulteress wife Calista could be the next occupants of the White house. I know that I detested Bill Clinton largely because of what a scumbag I viewed him as based on his affairs. Now we'd be electing the man AND his mistress???
I would need the largest clothespin ever to close my nose if this is my option. And make no mistake about the fact that the left will make this an issue.

Do you remember "You don't have to fear Obama as President"?

I do, and when I heard him say that, coupled with the fact he wouldn't attack 0bama on his past, I was convinced McCain was so in awe of 0bama, he didn't have it in him to win that election.

By contrast, Sarah Palin wanted to go at Obama on all fronts like a pit bull, but was frustrated by the constraints of the cabal running the McCain "campaign." Palin hungered for victory and wanted to pull out all the stops... McCain had no such desire. No candidate who wants victory suspends his campaign to attend a show meeting on bailouts.

McCain was just enjoying touring the country, giving a few lame, tired speeches here and there, and doing something different than whiling away his days at the U.S. Capitol building. Winning was never his intent, IMO.

This is why the GOP should never nominate someone who's a tacit fan of the opponent they're supposed to defeat.

I agree. Romney is no match for Gingrich. I assume his fund-raising will grow exponentially now, and I assume Romney’s will dry up.

America appears to have reconciled with Gingrich’s personal mistakes of the past, and it appears to despise Romney’s liberal flip-flops.

This race is over.

[”That is wacky un American BS, we do not select people based on polls, that is communism.”]

Communism is a social, political and economic ideology that aims at the establishment of a classless, moneyless, revolutionary and stateless socialist society structured upon common ownership of the means of production. This movement, in its Marxist-Leninist interpretations, significantly influenced the history of the 20th century, which saw intense rivalry between the “socialist world” (socialist states ruled by Communist parties) and the “western world” (countries with market economies and Liberal democratic government), culminating in the Cold War between the Eastern bloc and the “Free World”.

NOPE! Nothing in there about Polling...........But keep on trying. I kind of enjoy this.

We should be concerned by petulant selfish behavior that hinders the odds of defeating Obama.

“I’m not a Newt fan, but the silver lining is that they won’t be able to paint our candidate as stupid this time. It has been 40 years since we’ve had a nominee that isn’t “stupid”.”

I was thinking a similar thought as I was watching Rick Perry talking to Megyn Kelly earlier.

As the world's leader and spokesman we have had George W Bush, then Obama. 12 years of embarrassingly inarticulate speakers. We must come across as a bunch of idiots to the world. Ronald Reagan, “The Great Communicator”.

Newt isn't Reagan, but Reagan was a friend of his. Newt speaks with authority and knowledge on most topics off the top of his head. He doesn't need a teleprompter, hell, he doesn't even need notes (written on his hand or otherwise).

It's not that I'm about impressing the world, but it sure would be nice to have a president who sounds intelligent for a change.

That is wacky un American BS, we do not select people based on polls, that is communism , but then maybe that is what you support.

It's over, org. I've been around political campaigns for decades now, and this one has settled on a favorite nominee.

Communism did not select leaders based on polls. It selected leaders based on bullets and raw power.

All a scientific poll does, and Rasmussen is the best, is give you a statistical picture of likely outcomes on an event with limited choices. With the limited choices of Gingrich, Perry, Bachmann, Romney, et al, a large percentage choose Gingrich. That means that in the election, with a 3% margin of error, that Gingrich will take from about 35-41% of the vote. The next closest candidate, Romney, will take 14-20% of the vote. In winner take all primaries, that is not even close.

This race is over.

Cain, Perry, Bachmann, Paul, Huntsman, and Santorum need all to drop out. With Gingrich leading in Iowa, South Carolina, and Florida and within the MOE in New Hampshire, this race is over.
