Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has surged to the largest national lead held by any candidate so far in the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters finds Gingrich on top with 38% of the vote. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is a distant second at 17%. No other candidate reaches double-digits.
The national survey of 1,000 Likely Republican Primary Voters was conducted on November 30, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Anybody but the Cultist Romney.
Romney must be running short of TP himself!
Didn’t they run over to Perry?
Anybody but the Cultist Romney.
Whew---am I glad Rick got them cowboys from the old Chisolm Trail cattle drive.
"Ready to roll"....(cue theme from Rawhide).
“No more Amateurs! We need an old pro at the helm and it shows.”
Well said!!!
Everyone will struggle to win a primary against a sitting president with the media in his corner and with a billions bucks to spend.
There is no other candidate without flaws, yet there is no other candidate with Gingrich’s communication skills and experience with the media.
Also, he’s no dummy.
Wait, what? The Huntsman surge! LOL, that's the first time I've ever seen him past 1%... Lookout Santorum and Bachmann, your in danger of falling behind the Huntsman slow train to obscurity!
Huntsman = Romney
Romney’s only draws are that:
- he is not outlandish,
- he is familiar to us due to his prior run, and
- we have some residual fondness for Romney because he seemed better than McCain but the MSM forced McCain on us
Right, this is the 5th or 6th national poll to show this result in the last 2 weeks. (And a Conservative one at that)
By the way, how is that nasty rash coming?
I’m surprised Newt is doing so well. In most cases, Newt is worse at whatever your reason was for abandoning your first choice.
Suspicious that Herman Cain might have been unfaithful? Newt was worse.
Think Perry is soft on illegal immigrants? Newt is worse.
Think Huntsman is too moderate? Newt is worse.
I can live with anyone-but-Romney as our nominee, but Newt isn’t my first (or second, or third) choice.
This race is now over.
Conservatives need to get behind Gingrich. The not-Gingrich numbers add to only 48 and you know he’ll take half of all defections and withdrawal of candidates now that he’s the front runner. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some soon reversals on endorsements of some of the other candidates.
Gingrich 38 is only 12 points from the magical 50% that guarantees a victory with 7 other candidates.
Based on this poll, Cain, Paul, Perry, Santorum, Bachman, and Huntsman should drop out for the good of the nation.
So you are for Romney? There are no allegations of affairs with him? That was true of this father also.
If that is what defines what you want, Romney is probably your man.
I guess the Cain Train has finally been derailed by the media’s drummed-up “scandals.” Sad. I was looking forward to voting for a candidate with moral integrity.
Newt’s past disgusts me almost as much as Romney’s, but after giving it some thought, I think I could hold my nose and vote for President Gingrich. He’s a despicable RINO, but I’ll take that over Socialist R or Socialist D.
And he’s the Olympics man.
