Cementing the case that Gingrich lobbied
Washington Examiner ^ | 1130111 | Timothy P. Carney

Posted on 11/30/2011 3:02:11 PM PST by Fred

Again and again Newt Gingrich says he never lobbied. Bit by bit, more evidence surfaces that he did in fact lobby. Blog posts today by Ben Smith at Politico and Jen Rubin at the Washington Post help waterproof the case that Gingrich isn't speaking truthfully about his lobbying.

Here are some of the facts of the case:

I reported that Gingrich was paid by players in the drug industry to help pass the Medicare drug bill, and he visited Capitol Hill to convince lawmakers to vote for the bill.

The New York Times reports that Gingrich actively worked to pass bills promoting the use of electronic medical records and he was paid by the companies that would benefit from that sort of law.

Both of those seem to fit the legal definition of "lobbying contact."

Gingrich has a possible out on whether these were legally "lobbying contacts": He could plead here that he was moving votes not on behalf of his clients but on behalf of what he thought was best. Of course he and his clients agreed! Otherwise he wouldn't have taken them on.

The evidence we need to settle this is probably whether he reported back to clients on his advocacy.

Team Romney is out for blood tonight again.

Cain’s blood. Newt’s blood. Palin already bled.

Meanwhile, Romney and Soros scheme
while their surrogates litter the landscape with patriots.

When has Newt been anything other than a well-heeled prostitute?

Gingrich did lobby, but said he did not. He hoped that nobody would notice because, you know, no one really pays much attention to presidential candidates. This all makes perfect sense.

I guess he figured that lobbying would be the kiss of death, but getting caught lying about lobyying would be no biggie.

Riiiiight.

Republicans eating their own for the benefit of Obama and the Democrats. Too many fanboys more interested in promoting their pet "conservative" candidate at the expense of the others and not enough simply content with arguing affirmatively for their personal record . . . of course we all know that none of the other candidates have a record of actual achievement to match Newt's four consecutive balanced budgets, Workfare, capital gains tax cut, Congressional Accountability Act, etc.

If you can't stand on your own record of achievements, be sure to smear the other candidates with enough mud to bring them down to your level.

The politics of personal destruction--Clinton's one contribution to our country.

Be proud of supporting Newt be proud of your support for mandates and amnesty.

Why is it so difficult for Newt dudes to be proud of where their candidate stands on the issues???

Somebody remind me. Why are we supposed to care if Newt was a lobbyist?

Is it againt the law to try to influence a government that is taking and spending 25% of the national income. If that was 5% instead of 25% we wouldn’t have nearly as many lobbyists. Our problem isn’t lobbyists, it’s a government that has grown so big and powerful that it threatens our way of life.

Eventually someone will discover that Newt Gingrich and Tom Daschle are not strangers (see: http://www.healthtransformation.net/cs/newt_gingrich_tom_daschle_speak_on_healthcare_at_the_national_press_club ) and Tom’s wife is a lobbyist (see: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/washingtonpostinvestigations/2008/11/daschles_lobbyist_wife_might_c.html ) No doubt somebody said ObamaKKKare around them at one time or the other. ~ This is not rocket science.

I don’t care Newt is the only alternative to Romney and Obama end of story.

BTW attacking Gingrich isn’t going to help your candidate, unless your candidate is Romney.

Newt is master of double-speak:

Legalization of illegals instead of amnesty.
Taking money from healthcare and housing lobby and in exchange provided conservative cover and convincing conservatives about hc and housing industry needs, instead of lobbying.

Etc

Amnesty was the final nail

We’ve got a real mess in DC. 370 former members of congress and nearly all of them lobbyists.

Senior staffers are in on the game too.

“Somebody remind me. Why are we supposed to care if Newt was a lobbyist?”

Because the folks that attend the Church of Cain say so, that’s why.
