So, you seem to suggest that Cain supporters gravitate to Newt on philosophical grounds--yet a third possibility. Thanks for your addition. I'm simply curious at what dynamic is driving this transference, which seems so one-sided toward Newt and not toward others.

I'll posit here yet a fourth thought: that much of Cain's support is really of the "anybody but Obama/Romney" variety, which broke toward Cain once he surged toward the front of the pack, and now that Cain is faltering while Newt surges, he gains their allegiance.

If people say they want a ‘true conservative like Sarah Palin’ and don’t want Newt b/c he did a commercial with Pelosi - SP’s flip-flop on climate change is fair game.

Lame Lou, and you did not address the video. Perhaps you can find one with Palin or Cain saying the same.

I will wait around for it.

Newt was for GW, before he was against it....oh wait...he hasn’t said he is against it yet...but then again ...he might? LOL

Hey guys, I've got a great idea. Let's all vote for Obozo. Let's all of us Newt bashers destroy Newt and give Obozo 4 more years in the White House so the Marxist, Muslim scumbag can finish destroying this country. Then it won't matter who gets elected president because by 2016, we'll be owned by China. Yessir, let's do it. We'll show those friggin' Republicans who don't like the candidate we like. Let's all just blow off Newt; let's forget that he did more for the Conservative cause in the '90s than anyone had ever done since Reagan. We'll send a message by damn! Hell yeah; LET'S GIT 'ER DONE!!!

Probably a mixture of all three. The fact that Cain and Newt are friends, and they could see them cordially talking about the issues, can’t hurt. Sometimes in the “Consevatively Correct” environment of FR it’s easy to forget that most Americans don’t follow every position a candidate ever took, and disqualify him as a “liberal” or “RINO” if he scores less than 100%. If you took a poll on whether Newt is conservative/moderate/liberal, probably 95% of Americans would say conservative. If you took that poll of Freepers, probably it would probably be equal between the three.

Sarah Palin stated that Newt won one of the debates. Newt has the support of a few Tea Partys. Newt earned his way to the top of the polls..he was way down and Krauthammer said that Newt didnt stand a chance. Americans watched the debate and listened to all the candidates which resulted in Gingrich rise to the top. NOT because the media favors him..Imus likes Romney. Sabato was giving the dems “playbook” advice on how to get Newt. I say GOOOO Newt!!! time for America to have a intelligent president that is not entering the position in dire need of “ON the job training” we have endured that with Obama.

It would be interesting ultimately to learn why Cain-likers are swinging toward Newt.

Just curious, who would you suggest they switch to, assuming they have decided they are going to switch? Palin isn't running, Perry is an empty suit.

Frankly I'm becoming more optimistic now that Newt is surging. I think he's the best choice in the race.

I'm a realist, and in the beginning I didn't think he had a chance, so I looked elsewhere. I thought Perry might be the guy, but he turned out to be a flop. Then I thought Cain would be the guy...really liked him, but at this point he is damaged goods regardless of his guilt or innocence. Bachmann is toast, and never really had presidential "gravitas" anyway. Santorum is running based on vanity alone. Huntsman is Romney lite (or heavy depending on your viewpoint) and Ron Paul is crazy.

My wife an I are coming up on our 20th anniversary.

Ten years ago she was diagnosed with MS.

The Newt abandoned his wife who had MS.

I have no vote of confidence in anyone who abandons another in that manner, none whatsoever.

He is a quitter.

Just why is Paul crazy or Johnson? granted this whole line up sucks, it might be best to let obama win and pick up the pieces when it all comes down...it probably will all come down when the next president gets it, and if that person has an R by their name the left will never let us live that down...”see, your guy brought the country down” I dont think any of these candidates can fix it, they all talk about government solutions, the problem IS government.

Well said--I suspect it is a combination of factors, all of which break Newt's way right now, and I agree that Newt's broad reputation is certainly well right-of-center (especially when contrasted with his chief rivals, Romney and Obama).

And I think it's unlikely to change much: Santorum, Paul, and Huntsman never had a chance, while Bachman, Perry and Cain all have surged and then been rejected, so they are unlikely to make any strong comeback, given the short time and few debates left, and the unlikelihood that any scandal remains to be revealed about the well-vetted Gingrich.

So, it's probably down now to Gingrich vs. Romney, and ol' Newt seems to be pulling away while Mitt begins acting desperate.

You might be interested in post #49, by Katiedidit, right below your #48.

Newt is a reasonable choice now. Please see my post #57.
