LEXINGTON -- Police say a central Kentucky father trying to load groceries and children into a vehicle after a shopping trip forgot one thing - his 6-month-old infant.

It happened Tuesday at a Kroger store in Jessamine County, WLEX-TV reported. The father left the baby in a grocery cart after unloading everything else and drove away.

A few minutes later, a couple found the baby and took the child back into the store to call police.

Nicholasville police officer Kevin Grimes said the father quickly figured out what he forgot and also called police while turning around to get back to the store. He had only traveled about three blocks when he turned back, police said.

"He was totally distraught about it. He realized he had made a huge mistake, as well as we realized in this situation that people do make mistakes. It was an accident and fortunately it turned out very good this time and in this situation," Grimes said.

Grimes said no charges will be filed, but the case will be handed over to social services.

My 4 month old son was in his car seat between my wife and mother-in-law and I naturally assumed they took him with them.

It happens. Remember that story where the baby was left in a van while the parents went to work--usually the mom dropped the baby off at day care but couldn't that day, the dad wasn't used to bringing the baby and forgot the infant was in there. The baby died from the heat. I think it happened here in Canada, but I think there are similar stories in the States..

She yelled, "Thomas get off the floor. Thomas?! Thomas?! Is he back there?! Thomas! Are you hiding!?! This isn't funny!!!" He was still in Macy's, watching television.

When my kids were toddlers they thought it was absolutely hysterical to hide in those round carousels holding clothes on hangers, making Mommy petrified. :)

And if the baby had been taken, then what you had said?

The baby was taken. By trustworthy individuals with character and scruples.

Yes, thank goodness!

How often do we hear of people ignoring their responsibility!

I did something similar as the guy in the story...I placed the baby in a little child carrier and into the shopping cart, not the child seat...my hubby and other kids waited in the car....I got a few groceries...wheeled the cart up..and in that store, you wheeled your cart right into the lane where the clerk stood,so the baby was actually out of sight for a couple of minutes..well,the clerk then picked up all the items and charged me, placed all items in the bag, and then handed me the bag...well, I was out the door in seconds...only when my startled husband looked at me did I remember to go back to get my baby....yikes...I still remember it 25 yrs later....
