N. Korea renews 'sea of fire' warning against S. Korea

SEOUL, Nov. 30 (Yonhap) -- North Korea on Wednesday renewed its threat to turn South Korea's presidential office into a "sea of fire," once again stepping up its offensive against the Seoul government.

North Korea's military first issued the warning last week in response to military exercises by the South near the inter-Korean maritime border. The drills were conducted to mark the first anniversary of the North's Nov. 23 shelling of Yeonpyeong Island, in which four South Koreans were killed, but Pyongyang viewed them as a rehearsal for war against it.

"(South Korea) should understand clearly that our warning is not empty talk, and refrain from rash acts," said the official Radio Pyongyang.

The report also repeated North Korean claims that the attack on Yeonpyeong was a justified response of self-defense to South Korea's military exercises at that time.

In another hostile move toward the South, North Korea claimed in a separate report that it is speeding up its production of low enriched uranium for its light-water nuclear reactor.

The announcement by the North's Foreign Ministry came as Seoul and Washington are pressuring Pyongyang to halt uranium enrichment before the resumption of multilateral talks on denuclearizing the communist country.

Uranium, if highly enriched, can be used to build atomic bombs. North Korea has already conducted two nuclear tests based on its plutonium program, drawing harsh international sanctions against its regime.

The latest harsh rhetoric comes despite South Korea's recent attempts to ease tensions on the peninsula, which include a resumption of medical aid to the communist nation.

I think NK is intent on giving SK some Christmas presents. There is a report that Chia Head visited 4th Corps, naval units stationed at the NK coast just across NLL, and gave its new commander an order to take SK islands.

Are they doing this to assist Iran by fixing another hot spot to reduce the attention to ME?

Instead of ‘sea of fire’ they should have said ‘Ring of Fire’. Then they could have played Johnny Cash in the background.

There is certainly an advantage for them to act together.

In the recent past when NK stages an attack it is generally proceeded by these kinds of threats (which happen often) in conjunction with a visit by Kim Yung Ill to a forward military base.

May be something to this threat. He has been quiet for some time.

What's next? Will North Korea call for the 'mother of all wars'? Saddam pulled that - look where he is today.

The wise "speak softly and carry a big stick" - the self-indulged speak loudly and carry nothing...
