I agree. It depends on what the texts say. The only reason for releasing a text would be to establish a some kind of minimal relationship...

And how does someone release a text message? Unless the alleged messages are still on her phone, what proof would there be? Is simply typing something up and printing it out going to suffice as "evidence"? (probably yes for the dems)

You make a good point. If they are two-way texts with both messages and responses, that is different than if they are just sender to receiver.

I’m assuming that both Cain’s response and his lawyer’s response are predicated on the messages being two-way.

I still have text messages on my phone for about a year (would probably be longer except I got a new phone a year ago) from my sons, daughter in law, husband, sister, friends, acquaintances, facebook posts, etc. Especially if they’re from my son, I don’t delete them. I simply don’t bother to erase them.
