At the time, Inhofe had been critical of Revkin’s book, which promoted the theory of human-caused climate change, and said it undermined his objectivity as a reporter. Revkin responded to the senator publicly, though in a much less condescending manner. But the snideness in this private email isn’t nearly as bad as the fact that Revkin – at the time, an allegedly objective, neutral environmental reporter for the New York Times – seemed to be asking his highly ideological sources to back him up in this fight against Inhofe and other skeptics.
One more time: There is no way to be sure that you are objective. You may look back years later on something you wrote and feel good about it retrospectively, and feel that you did a good job - but you cannot know that you are being objective at the time you are writing. The only way to even attempt to be objective is to begin your analysis within, with a frank appraisal of your own motives and interests.

That is, the only way to attempt to be objective is to start from the premise that you might not be objective.

And this, reporters - who after all are selling their own objectivity - never do. Reporters can only get away with that scam because the rest of the reporters are members of the same guild - the wire service journalism guild - and can be trusted to stay on the reservation and go along and get along with you and each other WRT their own, and your, putative "objectivity." That is why a Dan Rather could double down when challenged on the fraudulent "Texas Air National Guard memos." He knew that no other reporter would attack his objectivity no matter how much evidence accumulated debunking his story. And none did.

Finding that a reporter is involved in the story he reports is strictly a "Dog Bites Man" proposition. No one should be surprised. There is a real scandal, but it lies in the fact that we all have been indoctrinated to sucker for the "objective journalist" con.

The wisest and most cautious of us all frequently gives credit to stories which he himself is afterwards both ashamed and astonished that he could possibly think of believing . . .

It is acquired wisdom and experience only that teach incredulity,
and they very seldom teach it enough.

There’s nothing worse than an OVER EDUCATED FOOL. Revkin and the rest of the socialist frauds that infest the MSM jumped on the AGW/IPCC CO2 gravy train because the scam was heaven sent if you were an anti american socialist democrat . Problem is they never understood the fundamentals. CO2 was chosen for political reasons rather than scientific and backfired big time when they were caught fudging the numbers to make it work. HELLO CLIMATEGATE. Revkin and the rest of the MSM frauds continued to bury their collective heads in the sand unable to face realty. They still can’t face it today.

"In one 2006 exchange between Revkin and the scientists, the reporter makes his disdain for Sen. James Inhofe – and “a big chunk” of the American public – clear, while promoting his book on the Arctic:

[Sen. Inhofe] still speaks to and for a big chunk of America — people whose understanding of science and engagement with such issues is so slight that they happily sit in pre-conceived positions."

This sounds very similar to a group that used to plague Free Republic some years back. Wonder if he's a member at their new home?

Which may explain why the scientists seem to view Revkin as more of an ally than a reporter in some of the emails among themselves. “I’ll let all of you know if there are any other reasonable interview requests from folks we trust (e.g. Andy Revkin, etc.),” wrote climate scientist David Thompson to his colleague Phil Jones in one message.

A reporter's career lives or dies based upon the number and prominence of his "sources". A reporter who covers "Climate Change" in a manner agreeable to the Climate gang gets access and interviews. A reporter who refuses to play ball gets frozen out.

It's how the Climate gang handled the "peer review" process as well, freezing out publications that dared to allow opposing views to be published, and ensuring that they controlled the narrative.

It's how the Left operates in DC as well -- if you are a "team player" you get access and perks and invitations to parties. If you stray off the Party line, then you become an un-person.
