US Election 2012: Newt Gingrich goads Barack Obama as Mitt Romney admits he is his main rival

Newt Gingrich has goaded Barack Obama by inviting him to a series of debates and allowing him to use a teleprompter if he wishes, as Mitt Romney's camp admitted the former Speaker is his main rival for the Republican presidential nomination.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives, who has made a Lazarus-like resurgence after his campaign all but collapsed in the summer, is riding high after winning the important endorsement of the conservative New Hampshire Union-Leader.

Vin Weber, a senior adviser to the campaign of Mitt Romney, the Republican establishment favourite, acknowledged that Mr Gingrich was now their main rival.

"I don't think it changes Romney's status, but it consolidates Newt's status as his primary challenger," Mr Weber, a former Minnesota congressman, told the Washington Post.

One thing about Romney, he will drop out of the race if he knows he can’t win. Maybe he’ll bow out after New Hampshire.

Just a few short weeks ago, reports were that Romney feared Perry the most because of his fund raising. Now it’s Newt from nowhere? OK, whatever.

This is good news. It appears that the establishment tops out a 25% of the party if Mittens polls tell us anything. BTW, Vin Weber is a loser. I am glad he is working for Mittens.

You're basing that on 2008 when he didn't drop out after losing NH to McCain? I don't exactly remember when he dropped out. Maybe it was after FR threw their support to Romney in order to stop McCain. That worked real well.

Newt could just as well invite Zero to not only use his teleprompter but let him have a team of handlers off site feed him answers. He could let Zer0 pick the venue, the moderators and even pack the audience with sycophants.

It would still be like having the Green Bay Packers facing the last place team in the local Pop Warner league. People would hate the Packers for agreeing to such a mismatch.

I think Romney would have a much better chance of beating Obama, but I don't see a lot of difference between Newt and Romney as president.

Romney has attacked every GOP candidate from
Gov. Palin (during the Election to help Obama)
through the present (via surrogates like Rove).

Milt has no shame.

I don't exactly remember when he dropped out.

It was two or three days after Super Tuesday.

He’s been stuck at 40% in NH..and for the life of me, if he can’t win a majority in a state where he’s all but a favorite son...he should forget it...before SC buries him...actually, I think his numbers in NH will start to drop...he might win..but just barely

I thought it was Newt who had a history of quiting when he didn't get his way.

That leaves HERMAN CAIN. “Quit” is not in his vocabulary.

To know Newt is to be turned off by his pin headed loose cannon-ness...He’s about as easy to warm to as dry ice.

May I quote you? You seem pretty typical of the anti-Romney crowd.

Dio, I agree. But he’s sneaky. He likes to get others to do his dirty work so he can look “presidential”. I’m convinced that Michelle Bachmann is hammering on Gingrich at Romney’s ordering. She refuses to lay a finger on Mitt and has been nutty in her attacks on various leaders not named Mitt.

“It appears that the establishment tops out a 25% of the party if Mittens polls tell us anything. “ <<

Newt is saving us from Romney for the time being. Of ALL places, in New Hampshire! I am indebted. That 25% you mention is so eager to get a clear leader up and running to take on Obama that even they may be inclined to drop off the Romney cram down, after these three upcoming primaries.

That was a positive comment complimenting Romney's common sense.
