Government ban on mercury-free fixtures takes effect Jan. 1
Within four weeks, it will be a crime to manufacture a 100-watt version of Thomas A. Edisons brilliant invention. Thanks to a Democratic Congress and the signature of President George W. Bush in 2007, anti-industrial zealots at the Energy Department received authority to blot out one of the greatest achievements of the industrial age. Theyre coming for our light bulbs.
Know-it-all bureaucrats insist that foisting millions of mercury-laden fluorescent tubes on the public is going to be good for the planet. The public obviously does not agree. Voting with their wallets, people have overwhelming favored warm, nontoxic lighting options over their pale curlicue imitators. Beginning Jan. 1, Obama administration extremists will impose massive financial penalties on any company daring to produce a lighting product that fully satisfies ordinary Americans.
The Republican House hasnt done enough to stop this. Rep. Michael C. Burgess, Texas Republican, added language to the Energy and Water Appropriations bill to prohibit the bans implementation. A Senate committee deleted this sensible amendment in September, and its been quite a while since Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has allowed an up-or-down vote on a funding bill.

When incandescent light bulbs are outlawed, only outlaws will have incandescent light bulbs!

Man FR keeps choaking on me. BTW, ain’t it wonderful to live in a country where you do not have a choice in the lightbulbs you buy, yet you can choose to kill your unborn baby? Soon you will not be able to choose your healthcare. As Yakoff Smirnoff said, “what a country!!!” Something is wrong here.

100 watt lightbulbs are valuable because they do emit heat. They can provide heat for animals and they can be used to keep water pipes from freezing.
It’s beyond frustrating to think that people can’t purchase what they need, as opposed to what the idiot politicians think is necessary to “save the planet”.
Me too, 503 errors. Service temporarily unavailable.
Aint it wonderful to live in a country where you do have a choice in the kind of Big Government politician money can buy?
You’re both dead on the money. This really sux!
Oh, and thank you to our MBA president George Bush for signing this imbecillic legislation into place.
Just another way the ‘rats have to strip cash from our wallets. Florescents are expensive and it’s total BS that they last a long time. I fully stocked up on 100W incandescent bulbs earlier this year and I’m glad I did (thanks to FR for alerting me to the problem!).
We just bought all Target had. The economy may collapse, but at least my home will be well-lit (and yes I have backup electric sources).
I was looking to buy more 95 watt at Home Depot this weekend. None to be found. Only some new incandescent “72 watt- same as 100 watt” nonsense for extra dollars. Bastards.
I am going to stock up on 100 watt GE Reveal bulbs. 75 watt bubs are safe for now. They get banned in January 2013 unless we get a Republican president with a brain
I was helping a friend put in a dimmer switch for a new chandelier. All HD hadwas non-dimmable compact fluorescents. Seems the dimmable compact fluorescents go for $15, what a rip off. So he’s stocking up on ye good ol incandescents
