This is unfortunate. But if these two were Muslims, they really were incapable of non-Islamic citizenship. In the eyes of all Muslims, Muslims are citizens of the Umma first - the community of Muslims. And THAT, if indeed they are Muslim as I suspect, is the reason for the attack and their deaths.

Father of murdered bride is chief suspect in honour killings in Pakistan.
Glasgow-based Saif Rehman, 31, and Uzma Naurin, 30, from New York,
Police in the country say Miss Naurin’s taxi driver father, 58-year-old Muzaffar Hussain, is being viewed as a chief suspect in the shootings.
Mr Hussain, from New Jersey, was in Pakistan at the time of the killing but has now returned to his U.S. home.
