Get out of large urban areas. If society begins to erode due to whatever, competing for necessities with thousands of others is the largest hurdle.
We moved out of the city. We have the ability to hunt, fish, trap. Have our own well, chickens/eggs. Planting fruit trees, have a garden.
It's tough sometimes, but learning to provide for yourself and not depend so much on the supermarket or local utility provider could pay off.
Besides, we have a nice home with a little acreage out in the country and away from the hustle bustle of the city.
