DES MOINES — Having just taken his place at the front of the Republican presidential pack, Newt Gingrich now faces a potential backlash from conservative activists here in Iowa over an immigration proposal that he called “humane” but that his opponents quickly decried as providing “amnesty.”

The former House speaker appears to have alienated some of the conservatives who had warmed to his candidacy by saying Tuesday in a candidates debate that he would allow millions of illegal immigrants who have settled in the United States to become legal residents.

The NYSlimes and WaPo both misrepresent Gingrich, as one would expect. But you believe them. Hmm. People like you are the liberals' lawful prey.

Good job digging out that info about Gingrich’s liberal record! The time to stop him is BEFORE he gets the nomination. Spread the word far and wide!

Who would sit around with these characters and act all chummy? Newt’s from the Northeast and he acts just like a Northeastern liberal. Like you said, they might as well vote for Romney if that’s what they support.

Newt will have to quickly talk his way out of this bump. Unlike Perry or Cain, I think he’s likelier to be able to.

Yup. Karl Rove wins either way and so does the media. Which has been keeping its guns silent on both Gingrich and Romney. One guess why.

You mean flip-flop. Yup, he can do a Mittens but the damage is done and then he comes across another used car salesman politician.

May face a backlash? I should think so.

Well it’s possible Newt won’t do that. Then again, this subject has been poison and Newt should’ve known better.

With the economy in the gutter tolerance for ILLEGAL invaders is at an all time low. Americans, conservatives to be more specific, do not want amnesty. Given these factors, I think it very unlikely Newt will have any more success talking his way out of this than Perry did.

Americans are a generous people but we do have our limits. We are at a point when Americans first is a must.

We can be proud of a GOP nominee who fights for the rights of illegal aliens and takes hundreds of thousands of dollars from Fannie and Freddie to be its “historian.” /s

Many conservatives will not hold their noses to vote for him under any circumstances if he would be the nominee.

Who is going to deport them all at this point? Will any candidate make that stand?

Trump has never been on my radar. I think Cain isn't good enough. If he were, there would be a Godfather's near me.

Enforce the laws on the books and they will self-deport. It’s already happening in states that have enacted strict laws to deal with what the feds won’t. No jobs, no housing, no entitlements, no ILLEGALs.

A small percent may move to another state but very near 0% will go back to mexico unless they are absolutely prosecuted here.

That’s the facts. Do I have a problem with making it harder for non-citizens to stay here than to go there? No.

Do you know what that’ll take? I doubt it.
