Newt Gingrich Stands Out On Immigration At Republican Debate Now one of the leading GOP candidates, the former House speaker takes a softer stand on immigration and in general as he and his rivals field questions on national security and economic issues.
By Paul West, Washington Bureau November 22, 2011
Reporting from Washington Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich took issue with rival Mitt Romney's hard-line stance on immigration Tuesday night as the GOP candidates returned to a pivotal issue in their latest nationally televised debate.
Gingrich said he did not want the Republican Party, which says it puts a premium on "family values," to promote immigration policies that would break up families that have been in this country for many years by expelling those who are here illegally.
"I'm prepared to take the heat for saying 'let's be humane,' " said Gingrich, staking out a moderate position similar to one that proved hazardous to Texas Gov. Rick Perry in earlier debates.
Romney, whose status as the Republican front-runner is threatened by Gingrich's rise, said that any form of amnesty such as providing a path to permanent legal residence, as the former House speaker advocated would become "a magnet" for others to enter the country illegally.

I remember the days FR was so slow I had to post 30 times! I’m glad that’s been fixed! ;-)
If we wanted to, we could. All we’re hearing from Gingrich is an excuse for doing nothing.
Have you taken the time to think through your position? How many buses will it take to deport 11 million people? How many guards on those buses? How many others to process the people onto the buss, round them up, find out who should be rounded up...
You might not like what has happened but that was then. If you got a plan, let’s hear it. Gingrich is right.
You’re wrong man, very wrong! We wouldn’t have to use buses, locked rail cattle cars would do. And container ships on the coasts. Modern efficiency.
But that’s not where you’re wrong. The question, before the transportation logistics come into play is, how do you round up the 11 million?
I'll agree the border needs to be secure first and Gingrich should have added that. But if you think 11 million people are just going to line up to be deported, you are not thinking clearly.
Does that mean you agree with me that it is not doable?
How about some humane treatment for all the US citizens that the illegals took their jobs!
Deport every damn one of the illegals and their offspring!!!!
Absolutely. Newt’s got it right!
I remember the days when if someone did not turn off the html bold all the posts that followed in the thread would be bold until someone switched it off.
There was a day when HTML bootcamp was very necessary. Where is that HTML boot camp thread anyway? Been a long time since I have seen it.
He stood out alright!
But he didn’t see that train coming.....
YOU.
ALWAYS.
WIN.
NOBODY.
Broken record.
(Face it. These are often very good articles. I have one coming up from the UK very soon, too). See ya!
Secure the border FIRST, then address what to do with the illegals in the country already.
Why do you call Newt an supporter of open borders? He has said the borders have to be secured, that it’s a national security issue.
Just enforce the damn laws already on the books and they self-deport.
This will be very interesting to you. Your fan club has added a group to Newt cheerleaders. The DNC has endorsed Newt for President. What on Earth are you thinking????? You, Newt, and DNC are all in cahoots. I have known you a long time and liberal is NOT a trait I see in you much. I am hoping you are just having a weak moment.

Humane would be allowing productive citizens to keep what they earn. Humane would be not plundering paychecks to give to those who don’t work. Humane would be not requiring citizens to support lifestyles they do not agree with.
I don’t like the idea of supporting snot-nosed kids that I did not have anything to do with. If the parents do not support the children, that is child abuse. Imprison them and care for the children in foster homes or whatever, but penalize bad behavior.
How about getting the illegals out of the country as soon as possible and opening up the 20 million jobs they occupy to those on welfare. If the welfare recipients don’t want the jobs, then off the dole and you are on your own.
I am tired and sick of being responsible for those who refuse to be. To hell with the idea of voting for a living.
Stop the giveaways. When these people get a few wrinkles in their belly, they will damn sure do something.
You don't have an argument from me on that one. But, that position is far different than mass deportations that some suggest on here.
Oh yes, let’s be humane. Try seling that one to the thousands of families who have lost loved ones to drunk, drugged, licenceless and insuranceless illegal aliens. The ones that the feds won’t deport and the states that try get sued.
???
short for without a licence and without insurance
