I don’t think the Navy will have a problem finding 3,000 fatbodies and screwups to RIF. I’m Army and work with the Navy a lot. I’d say 3 out of 4 Sailors wouldn’t make it in the Army.

I left after the Soviet collaps in late 1991.
I felt it would be a while before another major war.
I expected force cuts from the levels we were at would be responsible on the part of our government.
I had 11 1/2 years in.
I was indeed there because I thought I was better at what I did than many of my peers, and felt that my expertise mattered.
Was that a false pride? Dunno.
I am not suggesting anyone hold to a higher standard than I met.
Cannot argue with anything you said. There has been a marked decline in the quality of people, for the Corps, 202K allowed a lot of people to serve who would at any other time not be allowed to earn the title Marine. Earlier this year, I saw a lot of those less than stellar Marines heading out the gate. Lately, I checkout too many good Marines first term NCOs. Smart Marines who want a career move to whatever MOS they can get. Funny though, in 1985, my buddy switched to 0311 and took orders to drill field to stay in. Now, they have too many 0311 types. In the over all scheme of my life being riffed was a good thing although it did not seem like it at the time. Today is different from the last two riffs in 85 & 93. These young vets have no skills to speak of, many are products of our public schools and are not prepared for life without a safety net. The military gave them the necessary skills to fill non-rate jobs in a war. They cannot get on as contractors because they do not have anything better than basic skills pin their MOS. With a set pay scale who is a contractor going to hire, the 20 year SNCO or Officer with advance MOS skills or the first term non-rate? If the military went back to squad bays for E-4 and below they would reduce maintenance costs and eliminate quite a few of the problems they have today like the astronomical STD rate, rapes and single Moms coming out of the barracks. It also creates leaders as NCOs ran the squad bays.
Absolutely, it is not different than any other job. Although I believe the bar has moved a bit, after about 12 years most people are in for the retirement. I see quite a few 10 year vets leaving the service. Most have degrees, are taking advance degrees in universities or already lined up a good job. After 12 you would be a fool to walk.
When anyone decides on a career path there has to be an end game. Even if you just love the life, you have to plan ahead and retirement is always the end game for any career service member.
They count civil service with military as years of total service but it doesn’t count against retirement. I had 12 years of federal service, eight of them military. I did receive a 10-year certificate for total federal service, but when I left, I had accumulated four years of civil service.
I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if the Armed Forces also reduce or terminated the various contractors and place their service members into their slots. At the very least they would save people with the necessary experience needed for the ‘next’ conflict.
I think another 4 years of Obama, and you’ll be able to go to the pistol range and note that all the brass is flying straight up.
your opinions are exactly that....I did nothing wrong to be let go i have excellent evals or as you marines call it fitreps i was sailor of the year and my evals were top notch the reason I am out is because the they don’t want to pay for retirement so the you know whats can sit on capital hill and live continue to live with their millions.....also why not get rid off all those officers that are making us top heavy. Oh that’s right they are going to let them retire early at 15 years so they can keep the benefits why cant they do that for the enlisted with more that 15 years...explain that!!! and who are we protecting our nation or our leaders income. Not everybody let go did anything wrong. I have a blemish free records.
Apply for an office job with the NAVFAC and use your time in and grade to bump your way in and then your grade will add pay to the normal standard for that slot. Your prior service will help advance your retirement date and you will be working with an institution where you are already familiar with the culture.
Thanks for your service, but don’t let a screwing that we get all the time in the private sector poison your future — go out and make a new one.

At no point did I indicate one had to do wrong to be involuntarily separated.
I said the military exists stricly and fo no other purpose but to fight war, and that if you are there for any other reason you are likely to hinder rather than advance the mission.
I will agree that the officer corps needs to expand and contract with the enlisted.
