Occupy L.A leaders said on Tuesday that city officials backpedaled on an offer to lease a downtown space to the group after news outlets published details of the offer.
Looking for a peaceful way to end the Occupy L.A. encampment, the city offered to lease a 10,000 square foot office space in the Los Angeles Mall. The city-owned space, most recently occupied by B. Dalton Booksellers, was offered to the protesters for $1 a year lease.
But Occupy L.A. organizer Ryan Rice, who met with representatives from Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office on Tuesday afternoon, said the city staff were unhappy after numerous news outlets, including the Daily News, published information on the lease deal.
"They didn't like the media attention," said Rice.
Additionally, he said that Deputy Mayor Matt Szabo indicated that political feelings were hurt because numerous department heads hadn't yet been briefed on the Los Angeles Mall deal.
Numerous city agencies would have been expected to sign off on the lease agreement. Additionally, the agreements typically are sent to the City Council for a vote.
The mayor's office would not comment on the meeting Tuesday afternoon.
While the lease option may be off the table for now, Rice said the mayor's representatives remained open to working with Occupy L.A. leaders to move them to another site.
But it's unclear whether the protesters, who have been camped out at City Hall for more thanwo months, would accept any incentive to move.
Occupy L.A. protester Adam Adler, who has a small garden on the south lawn of City Hall, said he planned to make a counter-offer to the city.
"We demand the city give us the Hall of Justice. The entire thing," said Adler, showing off his collection of vegetables. "We can grow a garden on the roof."

yeah, lets give them city hall, sounds like a fair trade indeed!
Thanks Hojczyk.
$1 a year lease. wow.
Why are the taxpayers not in open revolt?
Now THIS is how our forefathers saw this country unfolding. Power abusing government, journalist reports to the people, people say "No damn way you corrupt idiot. You're out of there!" and the abuser is either taken out right then (given the court of law of course) or thrown out next election or changes their stripes at least on that specific action.
Hello? Did I just flashback to 1950s. We usually don't function so . . . uh . . . properly anymore. Refreshing. Hell I was born in the late 60's I was raised on impropriety sadly. Until Reagan.
In other words, the taxpayers would have been heavily subsidizing OWS there. wow.
I've no doubt they would have been ill and also (because of their contemplative and strongly opinionated selves, I've no doubt they would seriously have rethought this through and gone back and been even more specific with their language--knowing later how it would one be perverted, two trampled upon and three eventually just all out disregarded.
ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!!! These politicians are turning our country on its head. This is beyond comprehension really.
But Occupy L.A. organizer Ryan Rice, who met with representatives from Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office on Tuesday afternoon, said the city staff were unhappy after numerous news outlets, including the Daily News, published information on the lease deal.
I bet they were. When one is dealing evil in the darkness, the last thing they want is a light shone upon them for all to see.
"They didn't like the media attention," said Rice.
YA THINK!!!??
Your lack of personal opinion disturbs me.
Is better.

I looked up Tea Party L.A. and found an e-mail for press releases for their last rally on Oct. 11th. I sent that person the link to this and suggested that since Occupy L.A. is squatting on city property for free - or even with the actual support of the city - they should demand a refund of any money that L.A. collected from them for the rallies they’ve had on public property.
The LA City Council, and the mayor [which I’m sure you noticed] are scraping the bottom of the barrel.
LA, I’ll give you $2 for it if I can have a 3-year lease.
Tree fitty, I was there... :)
yes. i am quite timid. sort of shy really. this is why i don't use capital letters they scare me and draw attention to myself. ;-) lol.
I do think there is a case to be made their.
