Sarah Palin Infuriated Roger Ailes for Not Announcing Her Decision on Fox News
New York Magazine ^ | November 21, 2011 | Gabriel Sherman

Sarah Palin's announcement that she wouldn't run for president disappointed her legions of admirers — but it infuriated Roger Ailes. The Fox News chief wasn't angry about the decision itself. Rather, he was livid that Palin made the October 5 announcement on Mark Levin's conservative talk-radio program, robbing Fox News of an exclusive and a possible ratings bonanza. Fox was relegated to getting a follow-up interview with Palin on Greta Van Susteren's 10 p.m. show, after the news of Palin's decision had been drowned out by Steve Jobs's death. Ailes was so mad, he considered pulling her off the air entirely until her $1 million annual contract expires in 2013.

After the announcement, he called Fox's executive vice-president Bill Shine into a meeting. Shine is the network's principal point of contact with Palin. Ailes told him she had made a big mistake. "I paid her for two years to make this announcement on my network," Ailes pointedly told Shine. Sources described the episode on condition of anonymity, given the sensitivity of the relationships.

Palin is said to have made her announcement on Levin's show because she's been upset that Fox News has given a platform to Karl Rove, one of her principal critics. "She isn't happy with Karl," one Palin adviser told me. "From day one, he hasn't been very nice." Levin had become Palin's biggest booster in the conservative commentariat, and Palin is known for rewarding loyalists, and punishing her detractors.

Actually, I can understand Ailes being frustrated. Infuriated....that’s a bit too much.

Palin had, however, been a Fox contributor, and I assume she took their money. I can see how not having the scoop on that announcement would be frustrating.

It’d be like Clark Kent announcing his identity as Superman but not to the Daily Planet.

I think maybe Palladin passed on and his computer is being used.
There’s no way the Palladin on THIS thread is the one we know (knew?)

Wow that is sad. We probably should have a freeper buddy system to let people know that a freeper passes... :(

It’s comments like his that make it hard to be a female FReeper sometimes.

Yeah, but don't I make it easier, again? ;^)

"If it wasn’t in her contract, she had no such obligation to Ailes who should’ve kept in mind that there are other presidential campaigns down the road."

She may have had no obligation, but what happened to the loyalty that the Palin admirers bragged about back when she was stumping for John McCain in his senate race?

FoxNews gave Palin a platform with a contract ... one that she was not going to get anywhere else. Where was her loyalty when it came down to announcing her non-run?

That’s not actually true.

The only issue with Sarah is she needs more acclimation in broader issues, that answer the second and third question followup. She has the capacity to gain this, she just has to be immersed in it, like most politicos.

All that aside, and with that said, maybe a VP or cabinet position would work for her as it was her that has fired up the conservative right,...NO body else. If you believe there was someone else,...name him...(crickets). And she could continue to do it unfettered.

Loyal supporters for what, though?

This is about piece is about ROGER AILES and HIS REACTION. NOT SARAH PALIN. And yet, you got excited and jumped. It’s a non-story, because you were smart enough to already know that Ailes would be annoyed at Palin.

How many hours have you spent, onyx, defending someone who doesn’t need defending? How much energy have you put into the crusade of protecting someone who doesn’t relish victim status and who believes in self-reliance?

What would she say to you for continuing this charade of “poor Sarah, the media is picking on her”?

She’s a MEMBER OF THE MEDIA. She’s an author. She’s a former documentary subject. She’s a pundit on a major cable network. Her degree in journalism has served her well and she’s made money because of it.

She is not a victim because she took lemons and made lemonade.

Yes it is. Palladin was very polite and moral. I’ve spoken to him in FR mail. Those statements truly shocked me.

Yanno, Laz, I view you as truth in advertising. If I read one of your comments on a thread whose title is just asking for it, I’m pretty sure what I’m going to get. Caveat Emptor.

On the other hand, I don’t expect to be reading along in a thread about Roger Ailes and Sarah Palin and suddenly encounter not-very-thinly veiled malignant misogyny that reads like it came straight from the keyboard of a drunken pissant, if you know what I mean and I think you do.
