Anti-Wall Street protesters took over a vacant lot and adjacent park in downtown Oakland late Saturday and erected a tent camp to replace one torn down by police, setting the stage for a potential showdown.
Protesters marched to the lot and tore down a chain-link fence before pitching tents as a light rain started. Police on the scene did not immediately intervene and the camp later expanded into an adjacent public park.
"Occupy Oakland has a new home at 19th and Telegraph," organizers said in a message to supporters, adding there would be a big "housewarming" party. "Bring tents!"
The move appeared to be a direct challenge to Oakland police who less than a week ago forcibly dismantled a similar protest camp nearby , and risked igniting a confrontation. Police have said they would not allow another encampment.

There is an easy enough way to end this. Blockade the idiots in place. Don’t allow food, water and porty-potties thru. They will leave after 3 days.
What is the matter with Oakland’s cops? I can assure you that is they did that in my county they would have all been arrested as soon as they touched that fence. Since when are you allowed to destroy property that isn’t yours because you are “protesting”. This is no different than looting, which I am sure will be next.
A fire truck would work wonders, too.
For starts, the mayor of Oakland is standing with the kids...and encouraging them.
There’s no such thing as a “vacant lot.” Somebody owns it. Otherwise, there never would have been a fence, right?
It’s California, why does that not surprise me?
Unions. Second, leftist communists City leaders.
RIGHT!
It's not the cops so much as the ultra-leftist Mayor.
I imagine the Oakland Police would be happy to bust this socialist-anarchy movement up after what they have been put through by the OccuTards and the mayor.
Also - There were some articles and posts that the mayor's daughter is involved with the OccuTards.
From the article:
“I support the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and I am a passionate supporter of freedom of speech. However, camping on city property whether it is in a park or in open space is illegal and won’t be allowed,” Mayor Jean Quan said in a statement on Friday.
“While peaceful forms of expression and freedom of speech will be facilitated, acts of violence, property destruction and overnight lodging will not be tolerated,” police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said in a statement.
Arrest them all!
Post 6. Great idea. Then they could be folded, put in an envelope and mailed home.
Unreal. I know OPD’s hands are tied but if someone doesn’t get a handle on these occucriers, then some other citizens are going to get organized, get ax handles and get busy.
Just taking someone else’s property to squat on and continue your campaign of anarcho-socialist deviltry.
It angers me to no end.
Horrifying? Not so much, hilarious, very much! Watching a bunch of dirty, hippie libs getting pepper sprayed is a joy to watch although water cannons would have been more fun.:P
Why are OPD’s hands tied?
Tents aren’t cheap. Where are the “occupiers” getting the money to buy them every time they are relocated?
Camping in the downtown area of the city still has to be illegal. I don’t think they let the ‘homeless’ guys do that.
