So they get what they wanted all along, by purposely failing

Yes, because the automatic cuts avoids a government shutdown.
If the congress worked as intended the House would pass a budget with it’s R majority and the Senate would not pass a budget because it’s R minority would filibuster.
A budget close to the House budget- with it’s Tea Party influence- would result. Unless the Senate was willing to shut the government down.
The RINOs and Dems teamed up to prevent that from happening.
The dirty little secret is the auto cuts don’t start till 2013!
And, they wanted to be able to make it appear that the Republicans were responsible for the failure. It’s a win-win for them. And, a lose-lose for us.
