To this day, I occasionally enjoy a bowl of bread and milk, a depression-era staple which I picked up from my Dad. Just white bread broken up, sprinkled with sugar (maybe a little vanilla), and doused in milk.

Mrs. LaybackLenny looks at me like I'm from another planet. LOL!

We did exactly the same with fried corn bread and milk. Sometimes with buttermilk too.

We used to have that! Funny you still partake. :-). I can just see the look on Mrs. LaybackLenny's face. (generally speaking of course.)

My mom also cut up bananas (very thin slices as there were so many of us and not so many bananas.), sprinkle with powdered sugar and pour milk over it.

It was sweet and creamy and it was goooood!

My grandma would pour her warm sugared tea over her toast.

A lot like what my Grandma fed us as kids called milk toast. Toast with milk on it, sugar and maybe some cinnamon. She also made grout which is made with milk thickened quite a bit with flour than served with milk, sugar and cinnamon on it. Very good and out of Norway.

I like buttered toast and milk. My dad ate lots of it. I also love crackers and milk, and cornbread and milk.

Oh I want some toast and milk now! Better wait till tomorrow.

Had cornbread and milk yesterday along with ham and brown beans on the side.

One of my favorites, that was a favorite of my grandpa was when my grandma would fry hamburger or roundsteak or make a roast, she'd make gravy.
Dessert was always white bread with gravy. YUUUUUUM!

To this day, I love it. When I go to Cracker Barrel and have their pot roast w/ mashed potatoes and gravy, I always have them bring me an extra bowl of gravy. After dinner, I have them bring me 2-3 slices of white bread.

I think know I'd love that as entire meal.

I remember my grandfather doing that with cornbread. He sure loved it. He called store bought milk “sweet milk”. I got the heels of the white bread loaf when I ate mine. It was a treat to me. Thanks for bringing back those memories!
