I have an elderly neighbor here in NC mtns who tells me about the days before electricity, running water, tv, radio, etc.

She said her mother would send her and her sibs out to get dinner. They would come back with numerous vegetation.

The mother would put it all in a pot with water and cook. She said it was the best food - so good she said. However, she has forgotten what vegetation was good to eat - a lost art.

I have heard that the Great Depression did not end here in the mtns until the 1960s.

I live in the NC mountains. Lamb Quarters are delicious cooked or in salads. Chick weed is good and very nutricious in salads, or by the mouthful while you’re in the garden, or on buttered (the real stuff) bread. Chick weed is green in the very early spring under the snow. I make a broth from burdock root. It has an earthy, artichoke flavor...very good
