Washington and Des Moines - Throughout the roller-coaster Republican presidential contest, one thing hasn't changed: the stubborn refusal of many tea party supporters to warm up to Mitt Romney.
The swift rise and abrupt fall of a succession of GOP candidates has been driven in part by the restless search for a Romney alternative by that group of voters, who energized the GOP's big turnaround in 2010.
"They don't trust Mitt Romney," said Simon Conway, a Des Moines radio host popular with tea party followers. "Mitt Romney can be tea party one minute, and the next minute introduce 'RomneyCare'" the Massachusetts healthcare plan Romney pushed as governor.
Privately, Romney's campaign expects that tea party backers will rally around him once he starts winning primaries. Until then, he has made a carefully calibrated effort to embrace them.

We know what he brings to the table: a LOT of baggage. And it's the lamestreamers who are calling him a "frontrunner", when he's anything but.
Mitt is the guy the 'Rats want to run against, bottom line.
I'm not the one confused, but by your strange tone ("Ummmm"), I'm not sure if you understood what I was saying to AF Vet RR. My point was that a third party (Ross Perot third party run=Bill Clinton win) will only ensure Democrat rule. I cannot and will not support Mitt "Romneycare/Homo 'marriage'" Romney, either, because I, too, consider principles to be paramount!
But I do not believe pushing for a third party is the answer, as at this point, a third party which is conservative will surely split the ticket and guarantee the communist Barry gets a second term!
Amen, Jim!
Romney was the reason I “left that other site”. I refused to endorse him, called him a RINO, and expressed my thoughts about his governorship of my native state. I was subsequently hounded and and abused by the Administrator (A Rombot even in 2007) and I left.
I have found a home here on FR...and I fit in (mostly! LOL)
JRandomFreeper said "Ummm... No. I won't. I don't care about the Republican Party. Anymore than I care for the Whig party.
I do care about principles, and I WON'T VOTE FOR ROMNEY, PERIOD,
I agree with both statements. First, building a new conservative party from scratch will be much more difficult, expensive, and slower than using one of the two existing parties to advance conservatism.
If the Republican party were to become a conservative party, many of the long-time rank and file Republicans would stick right there just because its the Republican Party.
But voting in the annointed candidate every election only perpetuates the status quo. The party will continue to simply give lip service to conservatism while putting the good old boys in the positions of power. I think we are fools to continue to play that game expecting different results.
I care about the Republican Party because it is the closest thing to a Conservative Party we have and we can get to the desired environment quicker through the party than from without. If that's not going to happen, though, then I'm willing to pursue another path.
The Rinos figure the Tea Party voters will rally about Romney just as they figured Romneycare was a great idea. And nominating McLame was a good idea. And bailing out the banksters and GM was a good idea. And the unconstiutional super-committee was a good idea...That was worth repeating, SJ.
The country cant take anymore good ideas out of the Rinos.
That’s pretty much my thinking, too.
My main point to JRandom, and the original guy I was replying to, was that jumping the gun and clamoring for a third party is not the way to go, because we still have a couple of conservatives in the race, as of now.
But if the Democrats cross over and do a Romney “Operation Chaos” on our Republican primaries, and Romney “gets” the nomination, we’re screwed anyway, so then we would just have to see...

Yeah, I’ll have to do some real soul searching if Romney gets the nomination. I never get a say on who the candidate is, anyway. My state doesn’t count.
Same here! Last time, by the time it got to Mississippi, McCain was sealed.
I don’t know why we can’t have a “general primary” election day nationwide, like we do the presidential election, so all states would have a better chance at having a say.
Well, I like having multiple primaries. A candidate has an opportunity to correct the record. But I strongly resent the party playing favorites by punishing states that dare to move their primaries before Iowa. For some reason they consider one state Holy Ground.
I think it would be best to have 4-5 rounds, with multiple states in each round of primaries. And rotate it so that different states get shot at being first.
You are absolutely misunderstanding what I have been trying to say!
NOWHERE have I suggested supporting the LIBERAL Mitt Romney!!! NOWHERE!!! Please see the previous comments related to this thread! I said we must get a conservative as the nominee NOT the liberal Romney!
That’s okay. I can’t stand Mitt Romney’s politics, and didn’t want anyone to think otherwise. :-)
