Mayor Ravenstahl calls for Franco Harris to quit as Pittsburgh Promise board chairman

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl initiated the call for Steeler great Franco Harris to step down as chair of the board of the Pittsburgh Promise scholarship program, the mayor's spokeswoman said.

In a letter he sent to Harris and board members last night, Ravenstahl said Harris showed "callous disregard and indifference for the victims of child sex abuse at Penn State" after Harris spoke out in support of fired coach Joe Paterno.

Harris did not return several phone messages and it wasn't immediately known if he plans to step down from the Pittsburgh Promise board.

Harris, who played for Paterno from 1969-71, criticized the Penn State Board of Trustees last week for firing Paterno, who has not been charged with any crimes. Paterno and Penn State President Graham Spanier were ousted last week amid a scandal in which former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was charged with 40 counts of child sex abuse.

"I feel that the board made a bad decision in letting Joe Paterno go. I am very disappointed in their position. I thought they showed no courage not to back someone who really needed it at the time . . . . that is very disturbing to me," Harris said last week.

Some incidents are alleged to have occurred inside the Lasch Building, which houses the football facilities on Penn State's University Park campus, after Sandusky's 1999 retirement.

For the second time, where are Harris’ first amendment rights being violated?

But what you are NOT entitled to is to call for retribution and punishment of someone like Franco for expressing their opinion.

Says who? We do it everyday here on FR when we scream for the hides of leftist MSM personalities, congressmen and leftist celebrity losers.

Try and be consistent.

No mob rule here that I can see. Franco supported an abetter of child rape and the people running a charity that he was associated with decided he showed poor judgement. End of story.

If you don’t think losing your job for expressing an opinion isn’t a violation of free speech, you’re hopeless. Make whatever spurious argument you want.

As a FReeper you should be embarrassed by your constitutional ignorance:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

I have to sign an agreement every year with my company regarding conduct that could be construed as detrimental, including public comments.

You must live in La-La land.

Abetting child rape is as horrible as it gets. Someone who supports Paterno--who has much credible circumstance and testimony that points to the fact that he did indeed look the other way and abet the accused felon--should at least also disclaim his support if the accusations are true (which Franco did not do).

And Paterno himself recently said "I should have done more," which CLEARLY says that he knew. And, with all due respect, if as you say, you had never heard of Paterno and do not follow college football, perhaps saying nothing would be most appropriate.

There is a time to just shut up. Franco is old enough to know this was that time.
