>> Dream ON.
Newtie has 2 chances.
VERY VERY SLIM.
NONE. . . .>>

Thanks for the drive by comment. Dreaming has nothing to do with it. Newt has quadrupled his support in the past weeks. That has already happened. This piece merely gives opinions as to why that has happened.

Will it last? Short of scandal, I think it will. But Fannie may be the scandal. At any rate, his support has surged and there are reasons for it. This piece simply names them.

C Edmund, your heart’s in the right place. No question on that. However, underestimating the MSM and what their marching order is dangerous. Remember the interview with Christie where a couple days ago he warned us to not underestimate the machine? Chicago Machine is fully unleashed and Newt will surely be feverously attacked like Cain until Romney is left. Will I vote for Romney over Obama? You bet.

I won’t, however, give up so fast. I am not throwing in the towel on Newt, Cain or even Perry. Some part of me even thinks Palin is quiet for a reason. Not sure what that is, but perhaps a rescue trump card. Hang in there, but I think your piece is a little naive.

Will the Fannie thing rise to the level of "scandal"? I doubt it. It seems like a snoozer of a story. There's nothing shocking or salacious about it. There's certainly nothing illegal. It seems to blend in as "old news" like the rest of Newt's past. What's it really saying - Newt swam in D.C. circles? Wow! Shocking!

Cain's troubles on the other hand - justified or not - were salacious and shocking. It cast a light that was totally out of character for Cain. This is the sort of stuff that gives the story "legs". Follow that up with a poor debate performance, inopportune mental lapses, gaffes, and sliding poll numbers - and we have what we have. The narrative/conventional wisdom is written and begins to feed on itself...

Newt may also gain from the increase awareness that the knives come out when a candidate rises in the polls. It may serve to inoculate him to a certain extent. That inoculation may move the bar higher in terms of what it takes to knock a candidate out. In fact, I think Cain has actually been the beneficiary of this to a certain extent. His poll numbers - although headed in the wrong direction - still has him in the top tier, leaving many of the talking-heads a bit perplexed by his staying-power.
