When Texas Gov. Rick Perry entered the Republican presidential race in mid-August, he was touted as the candidate conservatives had been waiting for the antidote to the more country club sort of appeal of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. No longer.
Three months into his campaign, a new Washington Post-ABC News survey reveals that his numbers have not only fallen considerably among self-identified conservative Republicans, but also lag behind Romney and the majority of the other candidates for the GOP nomination.
Among all Republicans, 42 percent view Perry favorably while 38 percent see him in an unfavorable light. Perrys unfavorable ratings have been ticking rapidly upwards from 11 percent in September and 24 percent in October a sign that the more the party gets to know him, the less they like him.
But the trouble for Perry is even more apparent when you drill down to only those who call themselves conservative Republicans the people who tend to have outsized influence in picking the partys presidential nominee.

I am sure he is weeping uncontrollably.
NOT!
Part time Congress! Half their time in DC and half their pay!
WOO-HOO!
I love that!
So according to WaPo, the base is eroded in the ideological right.
Gee how did that happen?
When are they going to write Mittens is in more trouble?
They need to prop up his Weekend At Bernie’s corpse first.
The GOP must be suckered into believing he is “electable.”
Then they can show his corpse in all its gory horror!
The way it’s going, the media should have him back top in a few days, as they cycle thru the anti-romneys, hacking and slahing as they go. They’re going so fast it’s almost time to start over.
Rubbish. Rick Perry has called for the elimination of three overgrown and intrusive bureaucracies and should he succeed in simply cutting the Dept. of Education by one-third this alone would be huge.
Today he wants to cut down lawmakers salaries and have a part-time Congress, and adopt strict constructionists to the federal bench. And of course repeal Obamacare. He gets an A+ rating from the pro-life group.
I didn’t like Perry over his “heartless” comment but I’m ready to give him a pass on what was a clumsy off-the-cuff remark. With Cain (the first choice of many FReepers dropping like a rock in a pond) I prefer Perry to Gingrich or Romney any day of the week.
Romney remains stuck in media stupid.
For all the Freepers who practically screamed at me for being irrational, unfair, and eventually heartless for not supporting Perry - especially given that I’m from Texas and should apparently know better...
I told ya so. Did you enjoy it? Good.
If we can reduce the size of Gov, that is a good thing.
Exactly.
Perry has fallen a lot, but had a long way to fall, and seems to have bottomed out.
For example, among whatever passes as Conservatives in a WP poll Perry’s favorable/unfavorable is 47/37.
Herman Cain, the “conservative darling? 54/34.
Gingrich on the other hand, is at 65/19. I presume once we get two weeks of stories about all of Gingrich’s actual positions, that will turn around. Because for every false or overblown story about Rick Perry, there are two real ones about Gingrich.
And in the ONE thing that Perry gets reasonable attacked for, the illegal immigration issue, Gingrich’s stated positions were worse.
Of course, Romney is 60% favorable in WP surveys among conservatives, so it probably means that they aren’t all that conservative.
Every time Congress meets we lose a right. The less they meet the more freedoms we keep!
This is Mittens behind the story.
Nothing like trashing a rival and cutting him down to size.
He can count on the media to clear the path to the nomination for him.
The Cain folks apparently think that attacking Perry will cause his campaign to bounce back.
I love it but how could he ever implement it?
The scumbags in Congress would have to pass it.
And, well....
I love this! Been “talked” about, but never as part of a presidential campaign!
WOO-HOO!
Amen.
Congress has way too much time on its hands.
EVERYONE KNOWS IT!
AND THEY’RE OVER PAID!
They give raises and Cadilac Medical to themselves!
