CARROLL As he surged to the top of two national polls Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich spent nearly three hours at the Santa Maria Winery in Carroll on Monday, speaking with voters, taking questions, signing books and screening a movie he co-developed celebrating Pope John Paul II.
Gingrich also conducted a 10-minute interview with The Carroll Daily Times Herald and La Prensa, an Iowa Spanish-language newspaper, before going on air nationally with Fox News Sean Hannity from a makeshift, temporary studio...
....La Prensa asked Gingrichs reaction to an often-repeated line from Cain about constructing a border fence with Mexico so that it can electrocute immigrants, and possibly even snare them in an associated moat stocked with alligators.
It was a bad idea, Gingrich said.
He added, I hope he was joking. Id like to think he was joking.
Gingrich then turned to his own immigration plans, calling for control of the border in a way that is human and practical.
Im working on an immigration program which is firm but at the same time has a human aspect to it that I think most Hispanic Americans would appreciate, Gingrich said.
Earlier, in a question-and-answer session with voters in the winery, Gingrich said he wanted to impose severe penalties for employers who hired undocumented workers. Moreover, he put forward a plan modeled on the Selective Service System used by the military in World War II in which local committees of citizens could help determine the immigration status of a citys illegal residents based on factors like how long theyve lived in the area, family roots and contributions socially and in business.
Gingrich said rhetoric about deporting all illegal immigrants isnt realistic.
I think its very unlikely the American people are going to break up families, Gingrich said...

Tell me how Newt’s positions on border control are different from Juan McCain’s?
Agree 100%
He did not. He said it would be heartless to push them out of an airplane...versus giving them a parachute first (not heartless). ( It’s called comprehension....)
Obama and socialism and Rush said Newt is the only one going after Obama.
I guess Rush missed this earlier Perry ad.

They aren't. That's the point.
"I think it's very unlikely the American people are going to break up families," Gingrich said...
Hey, Newt, ask the families of the 50,000 Americans killed by illegal immigrants since 9/11/01 how they feel about deporting all illegals and their concerns about breaking up families. The illegals' families are free to go with them. How about everyone else who has to pay for the illegals and their anchor babies? Money stolen from working Americans to support these illegal invaders. Hospitals closing due to unpaid bills, healthcare costs through the roof, unemployment at 9% while millions of illegals work under the table. And you think we care if someone who has broken the law for years has to go home? Typical out of touch career, elitist politician.
Oh, and Perry's no different. Especially on this issue.
And exactly how is going to seal the border??? He doesn’t want a fence. He doesn’t want e-verify. One cannot station troops on the border without running the risl of violating posse commitatus regulations. Tell us please, what is planning other than amnesty?
None of the above.
No. The border not being sealed and the Feds saying you can't check immigration status in public schools or refuse health care. It's the people who hire them. It's the violence along the border. It's a miserable Mexican government that is too corrupt to begin to build a middle class. It's a lot of things but the tiny number who use the instate tuition is so small that it is NOT why they are coming into the U.S.
We need a conservative ascendancy in the U.S. not a drive them into the Democratic Party machine ascendancy. Perry is strong on this issue and he is the ONLY one running who will roll up his sleeves and FINALLY fix this.
I’ll bet I can call your bluff ......
Spin it anyway you want. Newt’s own words, votes, policies, etc. are out there showing he is just as much a big government supporter than the Dems.
Gingrich on video from 7:00 to 25:07 - Overall immigration to make it as inexpensive and easy as possible. Goal as president to have all illegals in the country now be American citizens within 5 to 10 years. Much more.

Oct 6, 2011 Interviewing Rick Perry On Illegal Immigration [10 Points]
Like many on here, they seem to want anybody but anybody. In other words, no one. Who can pass the litmus tests set out on this forum? By piling on every candidate they are making themselves irrelevent.
Do your own little poll and find out if you have converted one Freeper to Perry?
You might find that you have worked to the detriment of your chosen candidate.
That's true, and I say that as a tenative Perry supporter. Every candidate has at least one major issue that I disagree about. I think Perry is half wrong on immigration. I think he is sincere and right about sealing the border, but soft on illegals who are here already. To be honest, a lot of that probably is due to the dependence of Texas agriculture on illegals. I don't think that's any worse than the flaws of the other candidates, and I learned a long time ago that every politician supports something I don't like. When I look at the totality of where they stand on issues though, I think Perry is the best of the current crop. But I don't have to make an actual decsion until March, and there will likely be only 2 or 3 left by then to choose from.
