Congress wants to keep pizza and french fries on school lunch lines, fighting back against an Obama administration proposal to make school lunches healthier.
The final version of a spending bill released late Monday would unravel school lunch standards the Agriculture Department proposed earlier this year, which included limiting the use of potatoes on the lunch line and delaying limits on sodium and delaying a requirement to boost whole grains.
The bill also would allow tomato paste on pizzas to be counted as a vegetable, as it is now. USDA had wanted to prevent that. Food companies that produce frozen pizzas for schools, the salt industry and potato growers requested the changes, and some conservatives in Congress say the federal government shouldn't be telling children what to eat.

I got a better idea: let’s cut out school lunch programs altogether.
300+ government agencies to regulate school lunches.
Sigh.
Damned Republicans! They want kids to die! [facepalm]
Thanks for the ping!
Clearly they are shills for Big Burger, Big Fries.
At least they are not shills for Big Solar who got billions of our money.
All dem starvin’ chilluns need dem calories.
Sounds good! I'd like two sets, plus an apple pie, please!
It’s a typical liberal contradiction.
Somehow we have a childhood obesity epidemic while they tell us kids are starving.
Which is it?
But don’t tell a welfare percipient he can’t get high and buy Doritos!
The conservative kids are obese; the liberal kids are starving.
Obviously, redistribution of the calories is indicated.
If we're going to blow taxpayer money on these lunches, then those overpaid lunchladies can get off their duffs, put away their finger splints from pressing too many buttons, and start cooking for a change. I don't care if they make pizza and burgers, but they can damn well start making food again.
Either that, or replace all those very expensive idiots with vending machines and cut out the middle man. The kids can unwrap their own cellophane. Oh, wait, take that back, last time I was in a school lunch hall, they couldn't even be bothered to do that.
We pay already for staff at schools to cook. Like the teachers in the classrooms, they aren't doing their jobs either.
So Jane are you going to start a pizza ping list? ;-)
