Palin's "Crony Capitalism" Mantra Gets "60 Minutes" Boost
RealClearPolitics ^ | November 14, 2011 | Scott Conroy

If Sarah Palin had run for president, Sunday night's episode of "60 Minutes" likely would have marked a significant moment for her campaign.

In the venerable CBS News program's opening segment, Hoover Institute fellow and Palin adviser Peter Schweizer previewed his forthcoming book, "Throw Them All Out," which details allegations of legal, yet ethically dubious insider trading and conflicts of interest among members of Congress.

“There are all sorts of forms of honest graft that congressmen engage in that allow them to become very, very wealthy,” Schweizer told correspondent Steve Kroft. “So it's not illegal, but I think it's highly unethical, I think it's highly offensive, and wrong.”

Schweizer has been described in various news reports as a “foreign policy adviser” and a “speechwriter” for Palin. In fact, he is both of those things, and far more than that.

Though he has managed to stay largely under the radar until now, Schweizer’s influence on Palin since joining her staff last spring has been profound.

When Palin was still mulling a presidential run back in September, she delivered a closely watched speech in Iowa that served as a preview of sorts for Schweizer’s new book. In the speech, it was the former Alaska governor’s references to “crony capitalism” and “the permanent political class” that picked up the most attention -- buzz phrases that appear near the very beginning of Schweizer’s new tome....

Its amazing how the “smart” people are talking about crony capitalism since that dumb stupid Sarah Palin made that speech in Iowa.

Did you notice how it became part of the discussion in the last debate?

She makes a single statement, and it changes the political landscape.

That’s not going to change.

Just because she decided not to run for president... that’s not going to change.

She is the premier voice in the American political discussion, and that’s not going to change.

You know what it reminds me of... the scene in Schindler’s List, where they shoot the engineer who told them that the barracks would collapse if they didn’t tear it down and start again.....and then they do precisely what the engineer told them to do.

How dare these right wing fanatics tell the truth. The media and the dimorats just will not stand for this heresy. s/

This is all good and well to bitch about until we repeal the law that allows it.

Even my guy, Perry, doesn’t need to be yapping about it until a plan to abolish it it outlined by everybody.

Palin is far easier to spell on a write-in than Murkowski.

Did not Palin also coin the phrase “death panels” in reference to 0bamacare? She really knows how to hit the nail on the head.

What law is that?

And your guy Perry was pretty much the target of Sarah's original remark... don't ya think?

The Obama administration exhibits the most egregious examples of crony capitalism that the world have ever seen. GE is the number one crony partner of the Obama administration and Shepherd Flats wind farm is just one example.

Out in WA state we have a Gateway Coal Terminal that Patty Murray wants funded through Obama’s jobs bill. The company that will operate the terminal is SSA, which employs Murray’s husband and is run by the ILWU. Goldman Sachs is the majority stakeholder in the project.

Green Energy is nothing but a series of crony capitalist partnerships like Solyndra.

She also went about 90% towards cleaning out the swamp which was Alaska politics, including sending people to jail.

That’s what I’m wondering as well...

Cain is stumbling, badly, regarding foreign policy, which, like it or not, DOES matter. Any hope I had for Rick Perry ended in 53 seconds last week and I WILL NOT pull the lever for Romney, no matter what happens.

Could Palin jump in now and get the necessary delegates? Can we force a food fight at the convention? : )

Ike didn’t have to campaign in the primaries, he was drafted IIRC.

Don't forget “that hopey, changy thing” and “bullet train to bankruptcy.”

Yep, it was one of her greatest assets as a candidate. She didn’t just “debate well;” she gave shape and direction to the debate, and in such a way that multitudes of ordinary people could see it with clarity. She is sorely missed.

60 Minutes is hopelessly grasping for credibility.

But then there is Newt Gingrich.

Back in September, Gingrich was the GOP candidate who most directly praised the anti-crony capitalism sentiment that Palin espoused in her Iowa address, calling it “a very, very important speech” that raised “a series of very profound questions.”

Palin has publicly praised Gingrich’s debate performances in recent weeks...

In the absence of Palin I continue to believe our best hope to put a genuine conservative in the WH is Cain, imperfections notwithstanding. I credit his malapropisms to being out of his element and on a pretty steep learning curve. When he’s on his game he’s good enough.

Could Palin jump in at the last? I suppose it’s a remote possibility, but I don’t think she would do it, especially if Not-Romney looks likely to get the nomination close to the end. She’ll leave well enough alone. IMHO.

They should invite Dan Rather back; he took what scant amount of credibility they had with him. /s
