Neither did the greatest gen get rid of the war time practice of taking the “taxes” owed straight out of their pay checks.

That one piece of change has made more and more people less aware of the increasingly out of control spending, because if they HAD to write a check each year, the madness would have stopped long ago.

This practice was introduced to the government by an executive of the Montgomery Ward corporation, which used to be one of America’s major retailers.

That even pre-dates the Great Depression, so I wouldn't lay that one squarely at the feet of the Greatest Generation. Methinks that change was driven by the same people who brought us all that one world order stuff in the early portion of the 20th century.
